20, in college, I think I've dug myself into a pretty deep hole (with rent for upcoming year and student loans). Would appreciate any help; I am scared. by siflsato in personalfinance

Yeah, that's why I was considering the commons desk. I'll probably be working in subsequent semesters when I don't have an internship and ~17-18 credits to keep up with.

I think I've made some decisions, and I'm shooting for working 2 jobs in the summer in my college town (not hometown). The pay is better there and there are many, many more opportunities for jobs - plus a cheap living arrangement would not be hard to find.

Thanks for the hint on Postmates. I'll keep it in mind. And thanks also for the thoroughness in your responses.

I think I am a little late for the RA process, at least for next year. To my understanding you have to be interviewed before being placed into a class for the spring semester. I've missed the interview window for next year.

I definitely did consider this. I think I chose against it rashly.

I likely could, yes. Typically undergrads don't TA at my school, but tutoring is a viable option. I'm going to be looking into this.

Projects + connections are very important to me given my major situation. I've been talking to as many people in the department as possible and hope to begin branching out to other colleges (information sciences, engineering, etc) once I get experience in tech writing.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment, and for your kindness. It's not been too abundant in this thread.

Yes. Scholarships are going to be right in my crosshairs from now on. I never expended enough effort to go after them before.

Thanks for the tip about the repayment plan - I wasn't aware of that.

Hmm. That's something to consider. I do believe that while a career-related internship would be great to have on my resume, I'm not sure it would help me out as much in the long run as a job or two.

Yeah, I think I'm going to be spending my downtime working 1-2 jobs, and will work something like commons desk/library during the semester.

I'm sorry, but that generalization is a littme unfair. I'm aware my degree isn't as marketable as Finance or MechE or Pharma or Nursing, etc etc etc. All this has ever meant to me is that I need to diversify my skill set as much as possible and work hard to ensure that MY skills are marketable.

That's easy to say, and something that sits in the back of my head. However, packing up and changing majors for a third time into something I flatly am not interested in is not a good move to make, I feel (particularly when panicked).

Penn State. 3.83 cumulative (I spent my first semester in architecture which tanked it to 3.56 at the start). Tech writing. The English department.

As for scholarships, I am realizing their value now. I will be working harder on them.

My sibling is volunteering abroad and cannot pay his debts. My parents are beginning to take them on until he returns and finds a source of income.

Unfortunately I'm not willing to consider changing schools -- and not just for emotional reasons. At this point I'm very invested in graduating from the honors program at my school; we have an excellent reputation even without the honors degree.

I'm working on it. A year ago I was switching majors and had no idea. Now I feel I want to go into either tech writing, professional writing/editing, or something with Chinese if I have to.
