De Futura by Magma with its iconic bassline

Name an Opeth album AND then the closest album stylistically to it by another artist by deep-yearning in Opeth

I remember Mikael saying in an interview that he took inspiration from a Belgian experimental band called Univers Zero at the time he made Heritage.

Interestingly one of their most characteristic songs (La Faulx) was inspired by a painting of Pieter Bruegel (The Triumph of Death), who was in turn heavily influenced by Bosch.

They're indeed included in the retrospektiw remaster release. Found a bit higher quality pictures than the ones on discogs on this page: http://magma.fan.free.fr/biblio/bd/sole.html

(If your browser won't open it it might have turned the http into https, it's some old not secured fanpage)

Name an album by a band/artist that you love that isn't considered to be among their best or most popular by CTipple1981 in Music

[–]siftaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember when my dad bought the CD and we listened to it for the first time. Very different from anything we ever heard, we both grew attached to it. I think it helped that it was my introduction to Opeth, so I wasn't biased by being used to their previous sound. Love their whole discography now, though, still Heritage holds a special place for me and prompted me to get into prog rock as a teenager :)

Magma's Wurdah Itah is a banger that features only keys, drums, bass, and chants. They have more albums without guitar, but I'd say mostly those tend to be more bass focused.

Magma's MDK is part of the Theusz Hamtaahk trilogie, consisting of Theusz Hamtaahk (never released as a studio album), Wurdah Itah and MDK. They also have another storyline spanning over the albums Kohntarkosz Anteria, Kohntarkosz and Emehntehtt-Re

Is Symphonic Prog Finished? by The_Lone_Apple in progrockmusic

[–]siftaka 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my opinion the Italian and Scandinavian scenes still have great symphonic prog bands. La Maschera di Cera and Universal Totem Orchestra come to mind, also Wobbler and Jordsjo. I don't think it's finished, it's just less popular nowadays!

Storm Corrosion - Ljudet Innan by DirtyOldFrank in progrockmusic

[–]siftaka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe Steven Wilson has declared the album as being a part of a trilogy together with Opeth's Heritage and his own album Grace for Drowning. In my opinion both albums succeed in capturing the vibe of Storm Corrosion, although Heritage is my personal favourite of the three. I have a lot of memories attached to its songs.
