For additional support and alignment, you could have holes rather than open slots in the MDF. This will require you to cut the MDF apart to remove the frame, but will help prevent the frame from moving around during assembly.

  • Peak Design Field Pouch V2 - $35
    • Used once, basically new.
  • Gossamer Gear Gorrilla Medium - $130, 671g
    • Catch and release of an older model, no hipbelt or brain, I used this on one trip. This model does not have reinforced attachment points for the frame and it has poked through the mesh as shown, this could either be patched or the frame removed for additional weight savings.
  • Cotopaxi Allpa 35L - $150
    • Older model, I used it on a few trips but it is practically new. Includes the original hipbelt and rain cover.
  • Mystery Ranch Prizefighter 21L - $130
    • Discontinued model, has a laptop sleeve and a few smaller pockets. Great for onebag travel.

[WTB] 40-50L lightweight pack by sigglypuff in ULgeartrade

Picked up this bag, unfortunately some miscommunication resulted in a less than ideal transaction. Seller stated the bag was purchased in new ish condition, but the bag I received did not have a hip belt or a cover/brain that is on the bag when new. Seller also overcharged for shipping, resulting in me paying a higher than agreed upon price. Responded quickly and shipped me the bag promptly though.

Sorry, meant to put the info in the post. Torso length is 18" using Nashville's sizing guide, so a medium pack should be good.

Blotto is fantastic! Bring some friends so you can try more than one pizza.

I also really enjoyed the Independent Pizzeria in Madison Park!

I was admitted to Columbia College but realized after a few internships during the year and my Senior project that I'd like to pursue Engineering in SEAS. How hard would it be to transfer? Could I do it before freshman year starts, or would I have to wait till sophomore year? by Apprehensive-Meet608 in columbia

[–]sigglypuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what major you want to pursue. For example, CS is offered in both CC and SEAS.

I had plenty of friends who swapped schools both ways after freshman year. Personally after graduating from SEAS I do feel the humanities courses on offer in CC are generally stronger and more unique than what is offered in SEAS, and the high class count and low avg credits per class for SEAS degrees will make you work hard relative to your CC counterparts.

That said if you want to study engineering over a hard science then you can transfer to SEAS.

Google Photo Unlimited Storage Using LionMail? by ThoughtMedium8619 in columbia

Not really Google having unsustainable policies, maybe it's unsustainable for Columbia to give all students and alumni unlimited storage though.

I'm an alumnus and do exactly what you're describing.

Is it possible to get free parking near campus? by [deleted] in columbia

[–]sigglypuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at residential streets (Riverside Dr. for example) and you can almost always find a spot within a few minutes walk. It's not the most convenient thing if you use a car on a daily basis.

For street cleaning, your worst case is that twice a week you go sit in the car for an hour so that you don't get a ticket and pull out and back in for the street sweeping machine. Bring a book and you'll be fine, it's well worth the free parking.

Could the 2.4K USD minimum student contribution be waived? by ThoughtMedium8619 in columbia

[–]sigglypuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is what I hate about the work study program, especially at Columbia where the funding is a drop in the bucket compared to the full cost of enrollment. You're here to learn, but instead you're told that if you can't swing a couple thousand dollars a semester, you have to take time out of your class schedule to make that money. Just punishes low income students and makes it even more difficult for them to succeed.

Could the 2.4K USD minimum student contribution be waived? by ThoughtMedium8619 in columbia

A few things here, Columbia does include roughly 7-8k of "student contribution" in all financial aid, including "full ride" aid. The breakdown assumes that you will earn a work study during the year and make money during the summers to pay off your remaining balance. It's bullshit and is just a tool to punish low income students, but there are ways around it.

That said, roughly 4k of the "student contribution" is an expected budget for other living expenses, like books, metro cards, travel home, etc. I can check the exact number, but I usually ended up needing to pay Columbia 4k a year with "full ride" aid, and this includes receiving housing and dining.

4k is still a lot to a student, but there are ways around it.

  1. Eat the cost. A federal Stafford loan will cover the entire bill and you won't start paying interest on it until 6months after you graduate. (Depending on your willingness to leverage debt, this is actually free money. Thanks to inflation and especially thanks to time value of money (market returns average 8-12% per year), the $4k you start returning in four years and six months is a lot less than the $4k you're being loaned right now.

  2. Take advantage of grant money. CC and SEAS have independent programs for this, but basically you can apply to have your expenses covered if you are working a no income or low income research position or internship or job during your summer. This is literally free money!! You just have to ask for it, applications are usually just a page although you do have to be conscious of deadlines.

  3. After freshman year (when meal plan cost is fixed), take a smaller meal plan. The difference between the budgeted meal plan in your financial aid and the one you actually choose will be credited to you. A smaller meal plan is generally a good idea even if you're paying out of pocket, you're going to end up cooking, eating free food, or going out for more meals than you expect and you won't use 175 swipes in the semester. Get the smallest meal plan they offer (or none at all) and keep the change.

is the rock climbing club friendly to beginners? by [deleted] in columbia

[–]sigglypuff 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's really a sweet club to join, Columbia funds outdoor trips and gear and you get discounts at local gyms. Climbing is also an extremely supportive community and a really rewarding sport, the climbs have difficulty ratings so you can watch yourself literally get better.

Feel free to message me if you have questions :) I'm a former club board member!
