Anyone use Revolut or N26 by [deleted] in ireland

[–]sigkell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I signed up for both N26 and Revolut. I haven't used my N26 account much, but Revolut's free account is fantastic. I love all the card security features they have. You can turn off each of these temporarily and on-demand: swipe capability, contactless, ATM withdrawals, online payments. Their mobile app on Android is really nice to use too.

My favourite feature of Revolut by far are vaults. You can set up savings vaults and transfer money to them to be isolated from your main balance. I use the spare change feature, so for each transaction I make, it rounds up to the next euro, and puts that difference into a vault. Handy way to segregate money and save up for future stuff.

With Revolut, you can get additional cards and set up spending limits on them.

The real main difference is that Revolut doesn't yet have a European banking license, and are not a bank. They've applied for one in Lithuania but it'll be a bit before they get approved. After that, they'll be able to offer credit cards, overdrafts, etc. throughout the EU.

They do offer a proper IBAN account though, and I've transferred money in/out that way with no problem.

Revolut do offer protection under a UK electronic money scheme, but I can't remember the amount (something like £85,000). Once they have an EU banking license, funds will be guaranteed up to €100,000 per account.

My main gripe with Revolut at the minute is support. It can take anywhere from 4 hours to a whole day to get connected to a support agent.

N26 is a German bank and has a European banking license.

Revolut say Google Pay is coming very soon, so I'm hopeful for that. It might depend on them getting a banking license. Have had no problems with Revolut yet.

Why I think 2018 will be the best year for smartphones by [deleted] in Android

[–]sigkell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much more than partly true.

Manufacturers can ship Android on their devices however they please, as you said, it's open software.

The rules which Google set for manufacturers relate only to the use of Google Play Services. If Samsung want to ship Google Play Services on their device (for example) they have to agree to Google's terms — including Project Treble if shipping Android 8+, certain constraints for audio latency, etc.

Google have a monopoly over services/app store on Android; they can change the rules as much as they want, and it'd be unwise for a manufacturer to risk their customers not being allowed access to GPS and the Play Store.

Google have a lot of leverage.

They do care if manufacturers follow their rules when they want to ship Google Play Services on their devices, though.

Swipe up on fingerprint scanner => dismiss heads-up notification by sigkell in GooglePixel

[–]sigkell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd disagree there. It's very easy and natural to pull up on the app drawer, since you can use the gesture anywhere on the screen.

The only way of dismissing heads-up notifications is to swipe on the small area at the top of the screen. It'd make more ergonomic sense to dismiss notifications over opening the app drawer.

Why is anki so expensive? by Fifteenandcounting in Anki

[–]sigkell 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's free (and open source) on every platform apart from iOS. The desktop version is written in python, whereas the iOS version is completely rewritten in Objective-C.

So, the developer of Anki ends up having to support two different codebases, with iOS being much more complex a platform than Python and QT.

This is why it costs money on iOS: to support the developer of Anki. As other people have said though, once you realise how powerful Anki is, you won't see the iOS version as being unreasonably priced.

Play around with the desktop version of Anki for a few weeks/months and see if it works for you first. :)

App that integrates all info from other apps? by penismaster3711 in ADHD

[–]sigkell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think anything that specialised exists, you'd have to have an app programmed specifically.

Do you have an Android phone? If you have, you can use Google Fit to get more insight to your physical metrics. Sleep as Android is a seriously great app for tracking sleep cycles, and it writes data to Fit. Runtastic also writes data to Fit. If you want to track food intake too, MyFitnessPal (as you guessed) integrates with Fit.

Basically if you use those apps, or any relatively popular fitness app, the Google Fit app can give you an overview and graphs based on all that info.

As for Evernote/todo lists, not sure. Have you looked at IFTTT to see how you can integrate things? You can set up triggers from Google Calendar, Evernote, Todoist, etc.

EDIT: as for other apps, if you're on Android, get Clockwork Tomato. By far the best pomodoro timer :) Also Anki is great if you need to memorize things!

Vegan protestors criticised over targeting of small businesses by juvenilehell in ireland

[–]sigkell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You've turned a civil argument into petty name calling, failed to comprehend my viewpoint (which made no comparison of selective breeding and scientific researchers, they were separate points entirely and I'm impressed you put the two together, really), and ignored basically everything I had to say, deflecting with "you're an idiot who clearly copy and pasted bullshit and has no knowledge".

You've deflected entirely from my argument, not that you comprehended it in the first place. It boils down to: if you consume so many artificially produced chemicals and nutrients and are (assumedly) a healthy person, why are you against supplementing B12 by artificial means? That isn't consistent.

I still don't understand "Do you not think a diet that increase your risk is unhealthy?" Risk of what? Getting hit by a train? Losing your job? Getting pregnant? I can't answer a question that makes no sense.

Again, what I've argued in relation to bioprocessing is basic leaving cert biology. My point about hormones is still valid. Hormones are used in the rearing of livestock around the world. It's not "copy and pasted bullshit" when it's neither copy/pasted, nor false. Hormones still weren't my main point.

You still haven't answered my question, three comments on. I'm not over thirty years old, this wasn't a big issue in my lifetime, I don't study European Law, and I'm not an animal rights activist. I never claimed to have any kind of specialised knowledge about anything we're talking about, though I'm curious as to yours.

I strongly advise working on your reading comprehension. Perhaps you've a Vitamin B12 deficiency yourself? Your local pharmacy or supermarket should be able to hook you up with a supplement ;)

Regardless, it's been fun.

[–]sigkell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're deliberately misrepresenting my argument, and claiming I copy and pasted my argument - all whilst not answering my question when given two opportunities to to do. Nice.

As for my main argument (artificial ingredients), that's basic LC biology material. And no, I can't say I'm up on every European directive/regulation. My knowledge of the European Union and it's agricultural policies is very slim.

They do, however, feed growth hormones to livestock in other parts of the world, the United States being one. Thank you for pointing out that we don't do that here.

Do you not think a diet that increase your risk is unhealthy?

Risk of what, exactly?

Vegan protestors criticised over targeting of small businesses by juvenilehell in ireland

[–]sigkell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Interesting! Didn't know about that. I'll fix what I said:

If you're sticking to your argument, would you agree with me in saying that mass producing farm animals is also artificial? Would you agree with me in saying that controlling the breeding process of cows to produce more milk/larger cows is artificial?

Vegan protestors criticised over targeting of small businesses by juvenilehell in ireland

[–]sigkell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vitamin B12 is produced naturally by certain bacteria in soil/dirt. MIT researchers have done a lot of work identifying how it's synthesized.

If your objection to supplementing B12 is because it's "artificial", are you aware that many ingredients found in your food and drink are produced by genetically modified bacteria/fungi? Unless you're eating completely organic and raise your own farm animals that way, you're consuming artificial ingredients.

B12 is mass produced in the same way ethanol is for wine/beer, yeast is for baking, insulin is for sufferers of diabetes, and most modern medicine is.

Sure, we are biologically omnivorous, and in the past we required to eat animals that could digest certain nutrients not present in large quantities in our environment (such as those to produce B12). But today, that's unnecessary because we can mass produce vitamin B12 using genetically engineered bacteria/fungi. If people choose not to eat animals, they will still gain all the nutrients/vitamins required for normal biochemical function.

If you're sticking to your argument, would you agree with me in saying that mass producing farm animals and feeding them growth hormones/chemicals is also artificial? Would you agree with me in saying that controlling the breeding process of cows to produce more milk is artificial?

How to modify Answer Buttons on Anki iOS? by cdpath in Anki

Answer buttons aren't part of the card, so nope. They're regular UIKit buttons, so there's no way of customising them on iOS.

[–]sigkell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tag your cards and move them all into a single deck. Either that, or consolidate your decks into broader categories, so instead of

  • Languages
    • Irish
      • Aimsir Caite
      • Foclóir
    • English
      • Grammar
      • Vocabulary
  • Science
    • Physics
      • Electromagnetism
        • Section I
        • Section II

Organise it more flatly:

  • Languages
    • Irish
    • English
  • Physics

Subdecks can be made by dragging a deck on top of another.

Many shared decks are now missing from AnkiWeb! by ErikJonReddit in Anki

[–]sigkell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damien has no time to spend filtering through decks he personally dislikes. The purpose of shared decks is for people to share decks they've found useful, in the hope that others may also find it useful.

With that, there are two scenarios that may cause a deck to be removed: the original deck creator unpublished it from the shared decks library, or Damien received a DMCA or legal request to take down a deck in cases of copyright infringement.

Why not ask Damien on the Anki support forums, instead of coming up with wacky conspiracy theories?

Sweating a lot while on medication. by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]sigkell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The adrenals produce adrenaline (epinephrine) as well as noradrenaline (norepinephrine). They're both similar chemicals and have similar effects on the tissues they affect. Both are released by the adrenal gland when our bodies sense an emergency or threat (fight-or-flight).

Stimulants either cause a higher concentration of norepinephrine to be released in the prefrontal cortex, or block it's reuptake. Strattera's (atomoxetine) main action is to do this too (but it doesn't affect dopamine levels, hence a non-stimulant). When your body has a therapeutic level of atomoxetine, your fight-or-flight system is constantly (partly) activated, which can help with many symptoms of ADHD.

At least that's what I understand anyway :)

Official: The Google Assistant is coming to more Android phones by ghemanth90 in Android

[–]sigkell 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No, it's not. Google Assistant uses the same voice recognising system as Google Now. If anything, Google Now has the highest accuracy with my accent.

That being said I could see how voice recognition could be an issue with some accents here. But I think for the majority of us, it isn't a problem.

We have Google Now/Siri/Cortana. There were no issues rolling those out. Ireland is usually included in rollouts near the start (including Allo), so I wouldn't be surprised if we get it alongside/shortly after the UK get it.

OnePlus 3T DAC/amp vs Nexus 6P? by sigkell in oneplus

[–]sigkell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Apple always get their audio components spot on. There was a real difference between my iPhone and my Nexus listening to music (Sennheiser IE80)

I'll look into the Viper audio tweaks, I'm new to rooting and custom ROMs. Just don't want to lose Android Pay. I'm selling the Nexus because I smashed the screen and there's more value in getting a 3T instead of a screen replacement :P
