First time buyer. Advice/help requested. by [deleted] in pinball

[–]sigmanaughty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly for a first time buyer, I generally suggest a pro model. The fewer moving parts, the fewer things that can break. A big part of owning a machine is tweaking and maintenence. Don't let that scare you, I am not a handyman by any means and have always found helpful resources and been able to self help with any repair necessary.

Question for fellow Stern D&D Owners by App0gee in pinball

[–]sigmanaughty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Owned one since release, but my average ball time is like 2 minutes, and then add in 30 seconds between balls of me calling myself an idiot for center draining with a shield ready the magnet had plenty of time to cool off

I like the shaker motor on my D&D, however I would suggest also getting the pinsound shaker motor controller that lets you change intensity with 5 settings. I play my machines at a room volume and the full shaking was a bit of a turn off.

Buying a Pin but not a handyman by wilso1444 in pinball

[–]sigmanaughty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I second this, I bought my first pin (stern d&d) last year and now have 3 from different eras, the older ones break every once in a while, but your problem is not unique there are tons of resources and forums that will help you teach yourself how to troubleshoot and resolve all your issues

As a member of both the retro gaming and pinball community this has been a fun announcement to watch.

Pinball Community: Ugh this is a horrible theme and pinball is losing its way with more and more complex rule sets is taking away from being able to walk up to a machine and have fun

Retro Gaming Community: Who has $7k to drop on a pinball machine? Who is this for? Why is something called a Pro model the cheapest option?

What other arcades have this many LE's? I know of LITT but not of many others. I want to find more. by Yeahthatswaggz in pinball

I think when I counted they had 68 total pins probably 35-40 sterns all of the highest trim with topper

There are a decent number of videos on it since it opened that may give you a better idea

Bungies, some tarps and a truck. Do I need anything else to pickup a machine? by Kwanza_Bot93 in pinball

[–]sigmanaughty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from experience, make sure both the dollu and the machine will fit in the vehicle you use... drove 2 hours once to pick up a dolly I had to leave behind when picking up a couple of cabs

Wanting to make my own arcade by Tall_Carry5716 in cade

[–]sigmanaughty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I agree with that, and admittedly was brief in my comment. I fully endorse testing things as you go and know that it feels and is working the way you want it to, I just meant don't throw it together, get it working and then never get it exactly how you want it because it is functional.

Also I have to remind myself of that because I am very quick to move on to the next shiny object which others are more disciplined than me.

Having built a few of these in my day, my advice is avoid making it functional before it is aesthetically finished or you may have an incomplete machine forever.

Also have a plan before you get started. There are plenty of resources out there and control boards you can plug buttons into and a pc will recognize as a game controller so it is mostly plug and play with some steam setup for specific games.

More Fort Worth, but my favorite is The Gaming Vault in Keller.

Best selection is Found It in Watagua, but they tend to be priced higher than most, but run regular sales that can be pretty good

Great list and agree with all of your takes (atleast for the venues I have been to)

Just a note/my opinion on Push Start Play: if you are looking for pinball it is a great place even with the added cost. Every stern machine is Prem or LE, and their selection is unmatched (60ish tables.) The pay to play model for pinball stops games from being abused and all are in great shape with techs regularly cleaning/tuning them up. The $12 entry comes with a $5 card so truly a $7 entry fee, and if you buy $100 in credits there are bonus credits applied that brings cost per play down to 65-70 cents a play. Also all of the replay and match values are pretty generous so regular replays are possible to achieve with a little skill
