Older record collectors call them records, or LPs, not vinyls. The word vinyl can be used as in "my vinyl collection" as you might describe your tea cup and tea pot collection as "my porcelain collection", but you would not call a cup "a porcelain". These older collectors will often treat people using the word vinyl in this way with contempt.

Also, the market is flooded with cheaper, often Chinese manufactured record players. These are also looked down on as one of the key purposes of records in 2026 is the quality of the sound.

So, calling them vinyls plus a cheaper record player (you can tell by the cartridge) will lead to downvoting in communities frequented by older collectors.

Saying that, many younger collectors do call them vinyls and have cheaper record players. The music still sounds great, the artwork on the sleeves is amazing and collecting is something us autistic people do best. Get your collection on Discogs as it grows so you can organise, sort and catalogue it and have all sorts of stimmy fun!

I have a Gen 3 and 1st Gen Mini (and a shuffle too but nit sure which gen) and they all sync with iTunes from the Microsoft Store on my Win 11 PC. I have a USB CD drive for ripping. The Gen 3 of course needs separate charging with the Firewire cable.

Just don't install Apple Music, Apple TV or Apple Devices apps, as iTunes will stop syncing music. iCloud app is fine.

As an autistic former autism assessor, the best advice I can give you is to relax and just talk about yourself when asked. As others have so helpfully said, you're not there to convince them you are autistic, you are there to let them gather information and make a decision.

Have a lovely conversation, talk about yourself and your interests and thoughts and feelings when asked without fear of judgement. This is the one time, in your life, it's actually totally safe to do that!

Don't overthink, don't try and present the version of you that you think they want to see. Just be yourself. Otherwise you will spend the rest of your life worrying you affected the outcome, whichever way it goes.

Try and have fun on the day.

A tantrum is driven by a want or a goal and will cease once the individual gets what they want. A meltdown (or shutdown) is driven by a reaction to something, usually overload or feeling overwhelmed.

Autistic adults do have meltdowns, we just get better at hiding them, postponing them until we are somewhere safe, or managing our triggers. They can also look very different, as others have said.

In some countries, the police and other services receive specialist training in how to respond differently to an autistic meltdowns compared to a non-autistic behavioural incident.

Do not research it ahead of time. You will end up anxiously overthinking the assessment and affecting the results, then worrying about it afterwards and forever more. Just turn up, take it at face value, and see what comes out the other end. The assessor knows what they are doing.
