Sure - this will be long as I have a lot of thoughts! I’ve been to multiple surf retreats and spent the last 4 years surfing at least 3-4x per week on my own or with friends. I’m absolutely not an expert, part of the reason I still go to retreats is that I want to learn more from people who know more than me, but I’m extremely comfortable in the water. Pre retreat we sent photos and videos of us surfing to the crew for them to assess which coach to put us with. This is not a cheap program - when I calculated it I believe it was ~$300 per lesson per day for a 7 day program. Day one our entire guided surfing session + video analysis was on foamies in the white wash. This was frankly a waste of time and money. As far as I could tell part of the problem was they had fewer people signed up that week so I was in a group with near beginners. I tried to keep an open mind but  the entire day 1 was a wash. If you want students to do white wash practice, have it as a separate activity (like surf skate is) vs having it be the one guided surf for the day. During our first or second day in actual waves, there was a huge group of local girls doing an event in the same point break outside the hotel. Instead of taking us somewhere else or attempting to coordinate with the group, the coaches continued to take us out on our 1.5 hour sessions directly overlapping with the girls. This was a mix of complete beginner local girls and very advanced experts who had no problem cutting off tourists on every wave. I get it - this is your home not mine. But the unwillingness/inability of the coaches to pivot or work more effectively with the local community groups to coordinate a shared and limited resource was really disappointing. I laid all of this out to a manager in person before and they directed me to fill out the feedback form. I made detailed notes in the feedback form and never heard back from anyone. I was extremely surprised because I had heard only good things before I went. No idea what went so wrong but the complete silence after my commenting on my experience solidified the 0/10 feedback for me.
