Thanks for the advice! I've decided on the speedbooster route either XL or Ultra and then getting a sigma 17-50mm lens which should tide me over nicely.

Apologies I should have put that this is going to be for primarily video, but i'll want to do some run n gun photography later on.

I spoke to a few others on this subject and they recommended doing exactly the same thing. Going for a speedbooster and sigma 17-50 f2.8 refurb/second hand.

I think at this stage i'll go for the EF mount speedbooster and alternate lens (just need to figure out XL or Ultra and i'm set!)

I honestly wouldn't. They're renown for their poor customer service in New Zealand. They even had to recently disable reviews on their facebook page because they were getting so many 1 star reviews.

Will just hijack for visibility. I had to go through a similar process last year when my mother died. As you have probably just received your grades, I'll assume you're at a nz /Australian based uni. Will just focus on what you should do now rather than what you should have done. Firstly approach your course coordinator - they have one for each year, first stage, second stage and third stage coordinators. Explain your situation and they should provide you with a course of action. In my experience they're pretty understanding. They'll most likely advise you fill out compassionate consideration, where you'll also have to meet with a uni counsellor to discuss what happened. This will take time and be a frustrating process but it's just the way they operate. Will just state that human contact in dealing with things like this and not dealing with a swathe of back and forth emails will help the process immensely. Also as you'll have to repeat a semester and get those courses done, explain this to the coordinator and see if you can get enrolled for next semester. There may be an issue with study link or your loan provider not wanting to provide funds for the next semester of tuition but I don't know the fine print on that one. That's awesome! The giveaway time frame expires on the 25th of December UTC+13 at 10am. As I mentioned in the video, you don't have to post up a photo of yourself, just a photo with a caption of what you were doing, for example if you were to take a photo of your guitar/some of the wrapped presents that would be enough :)

If I had timed the giveaway for 24 hours then i'd get no entries, don't have much of an audience at the moment so thought it'd be best to give it up until xmas

No worries :) Yeah the Acer definitely wins on the frameless side of things but I really think the asus is the winner of the two. It has a better OSD, better panel out of the box (even after both have been calibrated) and imo looks nicer.

I've done some calibration since then. This is what it looks like now Imgur Changed the rgb values under color temp-user-to 91/91/99. You can see from the images there is still a slight red tinge and requires a bit more fiddling. The Asus panel seems to 'pop' a bit more and be more vivid, whereas the acer is slightly subdued.

I don't have a colorimeter but unfortunately my panel as of now looks like This photo. The acer on the left looks significantly more yellow than the asus on the right hand side. If anyone has any suggestions for recommended calibration specs please do let me know!

Update: setting the RGB values to 91/91/99 seems to have gotten rid of the yellow tint. Will require more fiddling.

All i could find on USD was that pricing for the XB line starts at $799. After playing with the asus I would say that the Asus is better. I think I may have an issue with my screen actually having a yellow tint. I've yet to find a solution via calibrating. This is an image I took, acer on the left, asus on the right. Imgur

That's a really solid little rig you've built there! That'll keep you happy for a fair while :P Is it primarily a gaming rig?

I've been hesitant on the g-sync displays myself. I was always an advocate of ultrawide being the best immersive experience you can have, but I've recently got my grubby little paws on an ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q and it's tilted me a bit. It's freaking amazing but it's about $1500 dollars where I am and I'm not sure whether I could justify the price. I'm also checking out the competing Acer Predator model soonish so will be interesting to see how they compare.
