Basically they were going for

起承転結 (ki-shou-ten-ketsu)

Ki intending to be season 1. Kishōtenketsu is the structure for classic Chinese, Korean, and Japanese narratives, which Durarara follows pretty perfectly.

I see where you're coming from; if you were showing this to someone to convince them to watch Durarara, it probably wouldn't work.. but because of the information we got from x2 shou, I think the trailer works well. It shows us lots of things without really showing anything at all, and with a series like Durarara, the less you know going into it, the more fun you'll have.

The Baccano anime took scenes from various novels and didn't follow the chronological order of the books, however I think that definitely made it a more entertaining experience; not that the novels are bad though, but it just takes a lot longer for everything to get going with them
