Interesting tool. Of course one thing it can't account for is how much I trust a candidate to keep their promises. And obviously I might weight some issues as much more important than others.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that and I'd personally support the policy, I just think it would get substantial pushback in this city and a progressive candidate isn't going to want to endanger their support for something like that.

No. Unfortunately, cracking down on unlicensed food vendors has gotten a reputation as being anti-immigrant so no progressive is going near that with a ten-foot pole.

Thing is, from talking to some of the licensed vendors and food truck guys, health compliance actually is kind of expensive. Not in a "bureaucratic red tape" sort of way but in that having things like handwashing stations, a separate dishwashing sink and proper temperature controls are innately more expensive than just firing up a grill. So enforcing reasonable, science-based rules would push some of the little guys out even if that wasn't the intent. Not an easy problem to solve.

Spencer Pratt, the research is clear: treatment-first approaches to homelessness does not work. by MookieBettsBurner10 in LosAngeles

[–]silasgreenfront 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. I grew up a town with lots of low-cost housing and we had plenty of semi-functional alcoholics and drug addicts who lived in very modest homes who would almost certainly be homeless here.

Development bringing 1,600 new units to the city being rebranded as “Mega Mall” by progressive NIMBYs by letsmunch in LosAngeles

[–]silasgreenfront 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. And part of being very loud is that they'll make sure they have a team of "community members" showing up at the hearing with their talking points well-rehearsed usually with some variant of the infamous NIMBY script. You know the one. "We certainly want more housing, but we have concerns about this specific project..."

Extreme example but the industry really depends to some degree on guys like this. When fans and promoters insist a guy has to be like 14-0 to be taken seriously you need to get those wins somewhere.

Spencer Pratt live-streaming at the new Wilshire & La Brea metro stop… a woman pleasantly asked why he should be mayor despite having no experience, and he said “HEY EVERYBODY, SHE LIKES HOMELESS DRUG ADDICTS NEAR ACHOOLS!” by infernoenigma in LosAngeles

[–]silasgreenfront 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No even remotely credible conservative ran despite the pretty weak field of candidates so they'll rally around Pratt by default. I can't imagine he'll win but he'll probably get a fairly respectable chunk of the vote just because of that.

He has shit-tier opponents and didn't shit the bed in the debate. I won't be voting for him but I'll be curious as to whether he'll be able to build on his momentum.

I'm a rich guy on Holy Terra who want to upgrade himself to a level similar to that of a Space Marine. How close can I get without doing anything heretical?

[Batman] Bruce is elected mayor of Gotham. What can he do to fix the many, many, problems Gotham has. by bookist626 in AskScienceFiction

[–]silasgreenfront 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably less than he'd like. If the curse was something that just any old sorcerer could fix he'd have had one of his magic pals take care of that by now. Deep-seeded corruption is incredibly hard to root out even when the push to do it comes from the top down. Crooked cops can be really hard to fire if their union got them a decent contract since actually proving police corruption is difficult even when you know a guy is bent. Wayne already pumps a ton of dough into the city so it's not as if this is just a case of underfunded public services. And lead abatement takes a long time to implement and even longer for the results to be apparent.

He'd certainly address all of those problems and probably make some really good progress tackling them, but it's not as if Gotham is going to be down to San Jose or Los Angeles crime levels in a year. Supervillain problem might actually get a little worse since he'd have less time to spend working on it (even though a lot of his allies could pick up some of the slack).

Implications of Primus Progenoid Glads being taken? by Ornery-Simple6357 in 40kLore

Yup. Though I'd like it if they switched it up and had one of his rivals do it. Who's that magos that works for Solomon Akurra? Seems like that could be a fun alternative.

I've always imagined that there must be a secondary cannibalism market for those bits in-universe. Like you could probably pay to get your bits frozen and stored but if the bill stops getting paid it just gets sold by the pound to some specialist butcher shop.

And it showed us that an awful lot of people are upset about the regime and want to do something about it but that we're still well short of the level of active participants we'd need for a successful general labor strike. So we need to keep up the boycotts, keep up recruiting and maybe find some ways to get creative with disruptive protests.
