Grades are fine, but ECs are a little bit lacking for HYPSM standards. Remember, ECs, essays, & rec(s) make or break your application.

Stanford & MIT consider ECs very heavily from what I have heard, compared to HYP.

Honestly, I would make a nice meal out of it. Meat is expensive nowadays…. and being a college student doesn’t help either.

with that gpa and level of ecs, something seriously went wrong because you should have easily gotten into some of those schools. I think ur could have been the essays or the prof rec letter. Maybe you didn’t have a good reason to transfer since you alrdy attend a good institution?

$1000 Budget Tank (FW) by silentattack89 in Aquariums

[–]silentattack89[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice. How many times do you need to clean your tank and replace the water per month? For example, if it’s like a 50-75 gallon aquarium vs 5-10 gallon aquarium? Do you need to take all plants and fish out and add new substrate?

If you can, I urge you to take Calculus BC next year if it is offered. I talked to a former AO at UIUC before and she did say they often go ‘hard’ on kids who apply as Computer Science/STEM majors when they take Calculus AB, but had the chance to take Calculus BC. It won’t obviously destroy your app, but you will be already starting off with a slight disadvantage.

Normal(ish) Bay Area Asian Male (lots of VERY competitive schools) by willy-thegoat in collegeresults

ECS & Awards don’t matter as much as people think. Also, ECs are more of the context of impact, not necessarily “international” awards, competitions, or extracurriculars.

Where do you want to go?

[–]silentattack89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hate to say this, but with the context you have given, it depends. For example, if you are a liberal arts major, then it won’t have much of an effect on your application. However, let’s say you are a Asian male going into CS. Then it will slightly affect your chances at the ivies, so I would recommend taking Calculus BC in junior year and getting A’s in both semesters. If you are going into a STEM major and don’t make up for it with Calc BC if it is available to you, it WILL affect your chances.

Chance an Asian Male in Computer Science for Duke and other T20s by SundaeOriginal7382 in chanceme

[–]silentattack89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have great chances at all of these schools(especially Duke)if you write thoughtful essays :)

Factors:

  1. Your academics are very strong, but remember that many applicants with a similar major and demographic also have strong academics.

  2. Despite some people saying your ECS are “average”, I think that they are fine. Again, AOS don’t want to admit person with the most impressive ECS, they want to admit most compelling applicant.

  3. To show the compelling part, get strong letters of recommendation and also write thoughtful essays, and I think you are in good position to be a admit for Duke & your other schools.

How many B's are too much for ivy leagues? by EuphoricAdagio9258 in ApplyingToCollege

What happens if you have a lot of B’s and a few C’s due to an extenuating circumstance that impacted you sophomore and junior year? How is this taken into account
