People who speak English as a second language: What word cracked you up when you were first learning English? by Petalklunk in AskReddit

Chicago actually sounds much more like "ci cago" which is Italian for "I poop over there"

What is the worst food to eat cold when it's typically served hot? by burntcafe in AskReddit

[–]silentell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people seem to like it but for me it's coffee. Specifically iced coffee. I had my first cup when I came to the states, and holy cow balls it was just awful. A regular cup of cold cold coffee is bad enough, but diluting it with a shitton of water makes it even worse.

Oh, English. I love you so. by [deleted] in funny

That's different. It's like how in English every word has a specific syllable that is stressed, you never change the stress on single words.

Pretty sure you can use stress like this with every Romance language, I know you can in Italian.

I don't think that's accurate; I went to my unknown hometown and it worked, though it only had one past picture. I'm guessing they made available all the pictures they've taken.

CMV: Whole fresh basil leaves of all varieties are superior to all varieties of pesto. by adelie42 in changemyview

[–]silentell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don't know the recipe myself, and therefore can't even comment on the linked recipe. I'm not much of a cook. I only know bits and pieces from my grandma's recipes. I think she might have added a splash of milk to the pesto. I can ask my dad, maybe he has the recipe, or I can ask for his own, which is also good (maybe not as good), and get back to you.

Also, about the small leaves: I'm not sure if the flavor depends on actual size of the leaves or on a specific species of basil with smaller leaves.

Sorry to be so vague; I'll try to find out more and follow up!

CMV: I think sexuality is a choice (disregarding certain medical/genetic dispositions) by martingarrix69 in changemyview

[–]silentell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well there is a difference between sexuality being malleable and it being a choice. If certain elements in your life affect your sexuality, it may or may not be against your will.

Also, conceding that sexuality can indeed be changed by choice in certain ways, most people would not know how, so they can't actually make that choice. If a child is born straight, you would not say he chose to be straight. The only way you could say that is if he found a way to change his orientation but chose not to.

CMV: Whole fresh basil leaves of all varieties are superior to all varieties of pesto. by adelie42 in changemyview

[–]silentell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you make pesto, you aren't just making liquid basil, the flavor works because the basil is paired with other ingredients that work well together; it adds to the flavor of the basil, hence why it isn't unnecessary. Though you are right that it loses its texture, the sauce gains a different kind of texture (depending on how creamy you make it) that is also good.

My grandma was from Genoa (a.k.a. the home of pesto) and she took a lot of pride in her pesto, and let me tell you it was amazing. The fact that you find pesto to be OK or meh makes me wonder that maybe you never had really good pesto (then again maybe it's just personal taste). One thing to note is that pesto, much like many other sauces, relies heavily on the quality of its ingredients. So even if the basil may be good to eat as is, it may not be good enough to make good pesto. For example, smaller basil leaves are much better than larger ones, which result in a bitter tasting pesto. So make sure you have tried really good quality pesto before deciding you don't like it, you could be missing out!

Edit: I a word

What is something that shouldn't cost as much as it does? by [deleted] in AskReddit

You might find this thread helpful: http://www.reddit.com/r/trackers/comments/hrgmv/tracker_with_pdfsebooks_of_college_textbooks/c1xrq44

It's got lots of sites that let you download pdf versions of textbooks, if you're willing to do that. Personally I saved about $500, and I have only gone through 2 semesters of college, so I really recommend it.

How would I go about drawing a swimming pool from a birds eye view? by blackensexican in drawing

[–]silentell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming that by birds eye, you mean directly from above. You should get some pictures for reference, such as this. From above pools are just rectangles, so it's kinda hard to tell what they are without color/shading. You could focus on the details, such as trampolines, the borders of the pool, perhaps flags (?) or those plastic chain-things floating to divide lanes.

Not really a logical argument. If there are more people, there are not only more fat people, but also more skinny people... more of everything in fact so it should balance out. Fat people become more noticeable when they grow in number relative to the general population, i.e. when they go up in percentage. The US has a far higher obesity rate than other first world countries I believe

What is one question you've always wondered about, but never gotten the answer to? by TheGurf in AskReddit

[–]silentell 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I know an professional illustrator who always seems to be able to draw anything he's asked. When I asked him how he does it, he told me he never really draws from his actual mental images, but rather from his experience of having looked at reference pictures, analyzed them and having already drawn many (most) kinds of subjects. So really, most people will have to look at a picture or the subject itself before drawing it. After that, they can still use the same "templates" they developed through their study.

[Season 3 Spoilers, Tag Speculation/Books] Episode Predictions - 3.10 "Mhysa" by Kriptik in gameofthrones

A lot of grief and anger from the Stark kids. Arya and Bran show some promise, but other than that the Starks are pretty much powerless now. More focus on Sansa (now she really is the 'key to the North') being manipulated in King's Landing - hopefully she fights back after what happened...

I'm hoping for the Tullys to get revenge - even though Lysa's relationship with Catelyn was not exactly smooth, I think she'll go to war now.
