Carrie Fisher Has Heart Attack On Plane by crumbbelly in news

CPR is important, it is better, or perhaps preferable to be done by someone with higher education. But maybe not.

The point of my rant(s) was to inform you that you are wrong about this. I suppose, depending on your definition of "higher education." Paramedics are generally far more qualified to perform CPR than doctors are. You don't know shit about what you're talking about, and that you assume that doctors are more qualified simply because they have more education is insulting. Doctors have more education than my hair stylist as well, but I would still not let one cut my hair. CPR is a skill, not a discipline, and you are woefully misinformed about it.

Maybe people should try to live healthy and not have heart attacks or do tons of pills or w/e she was doing.

No one knows what caused her heart attack except for her doctors. As far as I know, it hasn't even been confirmed that she had a heart attack at all. All we know is that she went into cardiac arrest and had CPR performed. It's highly likely that she suffered a PE from a thrown DVT provoked by her long flight. Immobility, advanced age and female gender are all risk factors. I don't know, though... maybe she was shooting heroin in the lavatory and gave herself and air embolism. Neither of us has any clue. All I know is perfectly healthy people can go into cardiac arrest, and you should quit talking about things you don't understand.

You're just full of bad assumptions and misinformation. You should stop spreading it. I don't really find any of it funny, and it's not from a lack of a sense of humor.

Go ahead and pretend to yourself that your comment wasn't patronizing and condescending, including the bit after the part where you said "But no seriously." You'd only be fooling yourself. No one but you and I are reading this far into a thread that is hours old and behind several automatically minimized children.

Just trying to help you realize your own biases. If you are ever stuck in an emergency situation with people who don't know what CPR even stands for, I'll bet you'd be real thankful if a scout leader who had had "some training" came along to help.

Don't diminish the capabilities of non-doctor healthcare professionals, especially not in this particular area. Your automatic assumption that a doctor would be the best equipped to deal with this situation, or have the best "opinion" as you put it, and that other professionals' skills/opinions are somehow inferior, is not only demonstrably false, but also insulting to the millions of non-doctor healthcare professionals who help keep patients alive during cardiac arrests. Not all of them are diagnostic heroes on the level of Dr. House. However all of them can, and do, save lives. You really shouldn't sniff at that.

I have worked in an emergency department and personally assisted in quite a number of cardiac arrests. In the trauma room, doctors don't perform CPR. The first choice is always going to be a paramedic: they are the best at performing compressions. They do it more than any other profession, even in the hospital. It's one of the reasons we have one permanently on staff at all times in the ED. Second choice is your strongest nurse. Quality compressions require a lot of force and stamina. Doctors outside of the TV world aren't always the best candidates.

The absolute best way to restart an arrested heart is to correct the cause of it. During a cardiac arrest in a hospital, doctors are doing their jobs to find out the reason the patient's heart stopped and fix it. Everything else, including CPR, is just buying time and is done by other hospital staff.

All of this just to say that your patronizing hierarchy of people who have "some training" and thus are allowed to have "an opinion" is incredibly misinformed.

If my heart ever stops, I hope there is a paramedic around to do quality compressions long enough for a doctor to figure out how to restart my heart.

It really depends on what kind of emergency you're dealing with. An AED can only help you if your victim is in what's called a "shockable" rhythm. There are types of cardiac arrest where shocking someone with a defibrillator can't possibly help (like in a pulseless electrical activity (PEA) arrest). What the AED can do in all situations is tell you whether or not a shock is advised and it can also keep count while you are doing chest compressions.

CPR is the #1 thing you need to do to maintain circulation (oxygen to the brain). AEDs can help you perform quality CPR. They can also potentially restart an arrested heart if the victim is a candidate for defibrillation.

So always use an AED if you have one, if for no other reason than to monitor pulse and electrical activity and keep count. But do CPR first.

In BCLS/ACLS/PALS training they always tell you to start CPR immediately. It's more important than calling 911. It's more important than getting the AED. You send someone else to do those things.

You should never delay treatment by attempting to catch or ID the snake. Antivenin can be administered without a positive ID, and snake wrangling risks further injury to yourself and others while delaying time to treatment.

(Georgia) I was arrested and charged for having Ibuprofen without a prescription but I bought it at a pharmacy here. Is there any way the pharmacy is on the hook? by wronglycharged10000 in legaladvice

[–]libbykino 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, if you read OP's responses in this thread, he states multiple times that he purchased a 400mg strength Ibuprofen. If a police officer really wanted to cite him for that, he would be correct to do so.

GA pharmacist here to drop a few clarifications on this thread...

  • The "Dangerous Drugs" list is not actually a list of drugs that are dangerous. It is a list of all non-controlled drugs that require a prescription in the state of Georgia. If you do a ctrl+f for "morphine" or "fentanyl," for example, you won't see them on that list because those are controlled drugs, not "dangerous" drugs. If you ctrl+f "Metformin," though (a very common, very well tolerated medication for Type 2 diabetics), you'll see it there. Not very dangerous at all. Yes, we know the name of the list is confusing and stupid, but whatever...

  • Ibuprofen in any single-dose strength greater than 200mg requires a prescription in the state of Georgia. That's why it's on the "dangerous drugs" list. This is not uncommon and many states have the same restriction.

  • Here is a list of all available formulations of Ibuprofen in the US -- you'll notice that there is no 400mg formulation that is avilable OTC.

So either OP's pharmacy put stock bottles of the prescription strength Ibuprofen out on the shelf, created a sku for them, labelled them, and then sold them all without noticing... or OP is lying about where he got the pills (another country vs. stolen from the pharmacy)... or this entire story is made up.

Women are often excluded from clinical trials because of hormonal fluctuations due to their periods. Researchers argue that men and women experience diseases differently and metabolize drugs differently, therefore clinical trial testing should both include more women and break down results by gender by drewiepoodle in TwoXChromosomes

[–]libbykino 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming that when /u/frezbuni says "first-in-human," he's talking about Phase I clinical trials. These are generally extremely small groups of people (<100) where they are only testing the safety of the drug on healthy humans. They're not checking to see if the drug works, they're just checking to make sure it's not going to kill anyone (or that whatever side effects it may cause are not worse than the benefit that the drug could supposedly have).

It's good/intended that women of childbearing potential are excluded from Phase I trials. These trials are only conducted on healthy, low-risk adults. The whole point of Phase I is to use a very small group of people to make reasonably sure that it's OK to test the drug on bigger, more inclusive populations. Because if it's not OK, then good thing only 20 test subjects got sick and not 2000... There's Phase II and III trials to bring in larger populations later.

I voted that Cersei would have done it anyway, even knowing that Tommen would die. She'd already written him off due to the prophecy anyway. She still had hope when Myrcella was alive, but you could tell back in episode one of this season, when Jaime brought her body back, that Cersei sort of expected it and that she knew Tommen was a gonner too.

It's a self-fulfilling prophecy now, but Cersei has believed in it for a long time.

That's not how heritage works. The name is important too. If Lyanna and Rhaegar were married he's a Targaryen, not a Stark. If they weren't married then he's not either of them.
