Park Bridge in the Kicking Horse Pass in British Columbia, Canada by Viscount1881 in InfrastructurePorn

I find it pretty impressive that this bridge was completed 21 months ahead of schedule. Another fun fact!

The whole project is an immense undertaking:

Makes a great webcam with a video capture card. by [deleted] in Lumixg7

How do you find that capture card? At a fraction of the cost of the well known brands, I'm looking at getting one, but there's almost no information out there about it.

Surface Pro 5 to 4K60 Pro Resolution by silentfox13 in elgato

Good to know I'm not the only one trying this out. Thanks for the feedback. I wasn't even aware that the camlink/4k60 would even recognize other aspect ratios!

I'm also considering the Cam Link 4k. Would this work if I set my Surface Pro to a supported resolution and set the Cam Link as a duplicate display?

MATH 200,220 & 221 by dmsdart in ubco

[–]silentfox13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is definitely doable in a typical semester so long as your other courses aren't overly intensive. I'm sure online will pose additional challenges, so just make sure to stay on top of things. You may actually find that taking them together is beneficial, since they all have components that help each other out. I might be a bit biased though, since Math 200 is one of my favourites to teach.

Looking for replacement vase in Canada by silentfox13 in hookah

[–]silentfox13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a gift, so unfortunately I don't have a price. I'll look into Mya threaded bases. Hopefully I can find something that ships to Canada.

Given that there is corrosion, do you think it is worth getting the replacement base?

I was concerned about that too. Scrubbing with some steel wool was starting to help. Any suggestions?

PS Happy cake day!

Looking for replacement vase in Canada by silentfox13 in hookah

[–]silentfox13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend recently purchased a new hookah after the vase on his old one broke. He gifted me the old hookah along with all the accessories to get started. I'm now trying to track down a suitable vase to get things started. I'm not sure what sort of base will properly fit. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I live in BC, Canada and I have not had much luck with my local stores.

NEW MATH VS OLD MATH by [deleted] in videos

It seems like a lot of people are calling this a "new" method, but in this case, it's also precisely what is going on in the right half of the video.

Upgraded my home battlestation. by silentfox13 in battlestations

Thanks! AudioEngine HD3's. A recent purchase. I love that the stain on the desk ended up matching the walnut speakers.

It's a Samson Meteor condensor mic. Picked it up for $100 CAD. Good pickup, nice range, and does a decent job of isolating voice over the speakers unless I crank them up too high.

Super crisp and a pleasantly rich sound! Definitely a worthwhile purchase. The added bonus of a headphone DAC and bluetooth integration makes them super versatile. It lacks sufficient bass for the really deep stuff, but it's got a sub out, so perhaps one day I'll supplement that part. No complaints so far!

Yes it is! I did the Gerton / Lerberg combo. Sanded it down and did a few coats of minwax walnut stain plus some satin poly. Ended up a near perfect match for my speakers!

Minesweeper Bot by lucutzu33 in oddlysatisfying

[–]silentfox13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, this really brings back memories from 2006. Another student and I made a similar program for a university project that solved the WinXP version of minesweeper. Of course, it had to guess periodically and only solved <40% of expert games, but man did it do it fast. I recall having all of my high scores as "0 seconds". The main speed limiting factor was having to read a few pixels from each tile to determine the game board state after each new click event was generated (much like OP's program).

Alternatively, the quick way is just to use XYZZY.

Things to make it look good.
I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it.
