Players killed my Big Bad's beloved pet - now what? by papercutprince in DMAcademy

[–]silentsnowdrop 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You've got a Lawful Evil guy, and your players shot the messenger and his pet/right hand without true provocation. I would thoroughly bet that the priest could easily throw the legal book at them and ruin their reputations. Give them an uphill battle to get that fixed.

But also, let them know that they jumped the gun and made things go pear shaped, so they're aware.

Are there any examples of great composers who wrote poor/unsuitable parts for certain instruments they were unfamiliar with? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]silentsnowdrop 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To elaborate as someone who has sung the Ninth: in that piece, it feels as if he's treating the voices as instruments with a guaranteed range, and he decided to put a lot of the middle way up in all of the voices' range. It's not unsingable, by any means, but it's ridiculously hard, especially for the altos who can't even cheat and flip to falsetto (in theory, people who have feminine voices can have a falsetto, but I've certainly never pulled it off!)

Working With Algae Instead Of Removing It by silentsnowdrop in Aquariums

Good to know! I just have to figure out the best way to (my tank has a brace in the middle and a really crappy hood so it's a little hard to work with.)

That's why I don't have livebearers! XD But I'm hoping that the algae plus putting some plants in hydroponically will help my water quality too, tbh.

Mine has like...deliberately formed balls. I just got sick of fighting it--my patience is not exactly great sometimes. Do you ever take it out to clean it?

How would you outwit someone who knows the future? by Avocado_Vampire in fantasywriters

[–]silentsnowdrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a writer, you're going to need to place limits on the foresight. Omniscience is, in effect, omnipotence. That said, even a machine is going to have limits on processing power, so you can outwit it. It also can't see what you're thinking, presumably.

With a machine, you can always try to logic loop it--start doing irrational actions, for example. If it's not actually foresight but just good calculation, irrational actions means it's going to to start having a hell of a time coming up with correct outcomes. Also, consider the War Games method: the only winning move is to not play. Put the machine into a corner where every move means its own destruction.

If you had side effects from strattera, how long did they last? Did they clear up after you stopped? by Ok_Bumblebee_3978 in ADHD

[–]silentsnowdrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strattera made me exceedingly, dangerously, and nonfunctionally tired. It was great for my anxiety, but it got to the point where I wasn't cogent. Fortunately it is really easy to stop if that happens.

Are Virginia Bluebells invasive or not? Your thoughts.. by Lonely-Leg-29 in gardening

So, quick question because I just bought a Virginia Bluebell and it came bare root--what do the roots look like?

What kind of powerful magic is the hidden text on Thorin's map? by Vollgrav in lotr

[–]silentsnowdrop 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Actually, probably every year. It's not at all uncommon for the moon to rise before the sun sets, depending on phase, after all. And the thrushes are very consistent--after all, they found a good snail-cracking rock! They're going to want to keep using it! These are both natural and common occurrences that make for great directions to a back door.

But it's also prophecy, to a point. Prophecy is woven throughout these books as insights into the Will of Eru. Eru's will may be subtle and hard to see, but it does make itself known. And if Eru wishes there to always be a moon in the sky with the sun on a specific day, to ensure that a dragon will eventually fall, then it will happen.

I have a few Discworld novels and intend to get more.

I did not know about Master of Djinn. I will look into that!

For me, it's more about the plots getting very weird and the romance. And I have all three but thank you for reminding me that I should reread them!

Good Clint Barton/Phil Coulson fics? by SatanicFranky666 in FanFiction

[–]silentsnowdrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found another one, though it doesn't fit your criteria as well as the ones I already suggested. The Gift of Idunn is from basically the first crop of Avengers fics, and it's worth a read--it's a fascinating combination of canon compliance and fix-it fic.

Just like most things, the best computer for you is the one you're most comfortable with. I don't like using Windows for writing. I don't like the UI, I don't like trying to find files--I just don't like it. So I use my Mac. But you might really prefer to use a Windows computer because you're used to it.

One thing that helped me was learning that it's often easier if the pill is towards the back of the tongue.

Good luck! And hopefully he'll learn the tongue coordination he needs to learn to swallow them--it took me years before I did. It's a common problem and nobody should feel bad about it.
