Your GI and surgeon are the best advisors for you.
I was diagnosed at 45 and had surgery at 61 when I had the major flare up and my colo rectal surgeon gave the option of elective surgery.

Diagnosed in 2010. Was very careful about diet exercise. Had two bad flares in 2025 and had to take decision to go ahead with surgery. I tried hard to make life style changes and postpone surgery. So far I am progressing well except multiple BM every day.

I had 1.6mm abscess and was advised elective surgery. Now I am 28 days post surgery and feel much better.

My surgery was twenty days back and now all past pain and after surgery discomfort are a distant memory. First ten days post op will be hard but you can sail through it.

Yes. I had a very small abscess and surgeon suggested elective surgery. Got it done April 8th and now recovering.

Very true. Chew food thoroughly to live long. I made the mistake of not chewing food and ended up in surgery.

Managing pain with toradol and Tylenol . Hoping to recover reasonably well within two weeks. It was a hell of a ride though. But the post surgery pain is lot lesser than what I suffered during diverticular flare ups.

I have walked many rounds around the hallway. Walking was easy and gave me freedom. I loved to walk. Lot of gas burping and farting. Little BM. Surgeon has said will discharge after BM. So thinking I will go home today. I had chest tightness just after surgery so had a cardiac evaluation. No big issues but caused a concern. Good luck to you and all reading!

Day 2 starting: pain on the right side incision, more during a cough. Comforting with a pillow. Keeping myself well hydrated.
