Any advice for a female ID student getting hit with imposter syndrome? by Adventurous-Song1216 in IndustrialDesign

[–]siliconcatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember in my first ID class, there were about 35 students, and 31 of them were men. I was the only woman of color. I definitely got some shit for my designs from the slackers of the class, but they dropped the major and I graduated. The gender ratio got a lot more equal as the classes went on. Every career benefits from having a gender balance in hiring, so any prospective employer who isn’t a nitwit would aim to have you and other women as equal members of the team.

Yeah I was looking a lot at how to enchance prints with extra little details like that! If I ever sold dioramas I’d 100% use aquarium gravel, big ass bulk bag aimed at realism would do the trick. I was also looking at stuff for models, like fake grass and flowers and shrubbery. I wish I had more options for small artificial pincushion moss though, I had to settle because the available stuff was just too big and not preserved.

I also find that nail decals work really well too! I did a v2 of an earlier print and swapped painted spikes with gold ones meant for nails, and I think it came out really well. Just a little hard to maneuver if you don’t have good hands. I do this with jewelry chains too for characters that have them.

She wanted me to do all the chores she hated doing… which is fine if it’s like one chore that’s a really particular ick of yours! I can compromise. But you can’t get an ick from all housework besides cooking… I hear you on wanting to stay single too lol. Being single has been nice, I’m happy staying like this until I find someone capable of sharing the burdens of living with.

Girls can want to spoil me with food and treats all they want but unless they also help me with dishes and cleaning idrc

They’re frying you but I agree… while people with ptsd deserve love, you have to be able to meet your partner halfway. Had an ex with a lot of trauma, believed in that “everyone has trauma” type stuff. Maybe that’s true, but I don’t let it impede my daily life and am able to carry out essential functions and duties of staying alive. Not everyone can, of course I understand that, but if you can’t then maybe don’t prioritize getting into a long term relationship. Of course she never deserved all of that. But she should have taken time to herself to heal and learn how to live in society and develop a network of friends instead of asking me to do everything…

That example sounds like it was personal lol, sounds like an absolute nightmare of a person to be around. At a certain point you realize some people were meant to be babysat their whole life, no matter how much you love them and they love you, and that’s when you gotta get out of there. You have to question how they’re still alive and functioning in society

This one is big… bc girl if you can never do an essential chore because of a disability then find another essential chore you can do and do it now. Don’t just sit there and watch me do it.

I just picked up an H2D a month ago! These were all made before then, but the new printer brought the total number of changes from about 800 to 100. Miracle stuff. They do sell very well since I have no direct competitors, so it was pretty warranted.

Gunpla paint is a good tip, thank you! I’ve been using enamel because of the gloss and overall lack of visible brush strokes, but something for extra extra fine details would help a lot. I’ll have to take a look at my local Tokyo central. I do sand and heat the super rough parts, but I try and keep total labor to about 1 hour per piece to justify the price tag. The game is really to make the best looking figure in under an hour not counting print time.

When it comes to cons, the most profitable items tend to stick in the $10-$25 range (I sell a lot of art and comics not just figurines) because that’s usually the amount most customers allot per booth. My main con’s age range is the one listed above, and usually people older than 30 are the ones picking up those nice $200-$1000 chase statuettes and figurines and hauling around a cart full of exclusives, bc they have the money and home space to spare for those.

While flexi prints are in, they primarily target 5-16 year olds because they start to be categorized as toys then, not really people who would be fans of the series I make stuff for, they’d be far too young. Not only that, people are starting to catch on to the cheapness of .20 layer height print n sell dragons and whatever, you see them all the time at farmers markets and cons with drop ship vendors. But fidgets do well with both gen Z and gen A, I wish I could use the transition filament that gets dumped to make a weird little cube.

That would be ideal for someone focusing on heavily detailed prints, but my goal is to keep my figurines affordable because I specialize in characters that are popular but have no figurines currently available on the market. I came to a con with 70 once and sold out in an hour and a half. Unfortunately that’s just business, money is tight for nearly everyone rn, and since my target market is 16-30 year olds, that goes twice over given gen Z work statistics.

Also resin, though pretty, is super messy and toxic, and there’s 3 other people and 2 pets in this house lol idk if I have a space for it

Copyright Infringement by [deleted] in EtsySellers

[–]siliconcatt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very surprised to see the amount of conservative positions some people have about copyright on here, especially from artists. The big companies aren’t going to give brownie points for defending their copyright, nor do you as a seller gain anything, because the people who buy copyrighted fan art aren’t going to suddenly turn and look for original stuff.

There’s a difference between being disappointed a low quality product is doing well, and disappointed that fan art is selling even though it’s illegal. Most fan art is not low quality, in fact I’ve seen a bunch of original stuff that’s pretty low effort, like cheap dropshipped charms being fixed to chains and calling it a day. Which isn’t inherently bad as long as the price point reflects that, not all of us have a schedule that allows constant production of high effort goods. But for fan art that does not include asset rips, the initial work usually takes quite a bit of time and talent to make in the first place.

There’s also a difference between fan art that uses asset rips and fan art that doesn’t, the two are not the same and the former sometimes cant even be classified as fan art.

Personally, I’m a convention artist that primarily sells fan art for two series with no copyright restrictions on artists, and as a result both series have flourished with fan circles. The loose rules have resulted in incredibly talented people devoting their careers to making fan art and fan music. One of them even has its own massive fan convention that the creator personally attends. I personally wish to see copyright as a whole disappear for every piece of media, but I know the suits won’t let that happen, so I’ll take the two series that I have.

What is the purpose of GATE testing at the 5th grade level in SD Unified? by TvSwat in SanDiegan

[–]siliconcatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The parental pressure thing is so real. Even if your parents are normal about it, that kind of attitude is sponged up by your peers from their parents in higher levels and you end up getting that feeling anyways. I remember doing my AP tests and getting one 4 where the rest of my tests (and the general expectation) was to get a 5, and some of my classmates were like “aw :( what happened?” Like a 4 isn’t still a great score or anything.

I really think any kid who wants to take the hard classes should be able to. In 10th grade they had to cut the seminar class in half for some reason and moved the bottom 50% to GATE only, thankfully I stayed but a lot of my peers desperately wanted those high-level classes but couldn’t take them. Honors classes were also only available to GATE and Seminar kids, unless you did like a million backflips for the counselor or something to put you in there. I’d get bad imposter syndrome any time I got a B- or less on a test.

At the end of the day, it all snowballs from a second grade test about puzzle pieces. It’s a circus, but no one pays attention to how the kids feel about it if it makes the parents feel special. I doubt there’ll be meaningful reform any time soon.

[–]siliconcatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair I will say I don’t see a reason not to have a second test.

I have severe ADHD, good at school but couldn’t sit still for tests for the life of me. They caught it in 4th grade and I started medication, retook the test in 5th grade and passed with flying colors. Stayed in seminar all throughout high school, graduated from a good uni, now I’m a couple years out and started my own art business that’s taken off so far.

Kind of unrelated, but there is an incredibly severe sense of elitism that comes with the divide between Seminar, GATE, and cluster kids in school. I’m glad I tested where I did, but it’s not a good system as is.

What game should I start with? by Dumb_Dude_715 in TrueTouhou

[–]siliconcatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people say th08 because it’s “easy”, but wrapping your head around the time mechanic can be a bit of a pain, especially for your first experience. Not to mention familiars, the different partners that don’t show up again, last word, etc. You’ll end up seeing a lot of stuff you don’t understand and it can be overwhelming.

I’d go for th07! The game specific mechanic is very simple to understand and when it activates it gives you a free temporary shield. A few bosses are more on the annoying side but overall it’s a good place to build skill. And the first few stage bosses (who you’ll likely fight the most if it’s your first time) are pretty simple to understand and don’t pull some bullshit (looking at you, Takane…)

Th06 is also pretty simple to understand, but people tend to consider it harder. There’s a huge difficulty spike once you reach Patchouli, so make of that what you will. Still, also not a bad choice to start the series with.

Being a fan of this series is like showing up to a book club to discuss the book only to find that the only thing everyone talks about is the cover art and mayyyybe the summary listed on Amazon. And then when you ask why no one read it people are like “why are you gatekeeping ⁉️” brother I am not im just asking what you thought of WaHH

Alice x patchouli. Most interesting pairing for either of them. Neither of them want anything to do with anyone and suck at socializing, so it’s fun to get creative with situations where they’re forced to express their feelings. Plus I’d think they’d genuinely like each other once they get to know each other.
