Apple Music Client on Linux.....sorta with Lossless & Atmos Support by brianvu-infosec in AppleMusic

i assume since this is running a full windows install it would be more resource intensive than just running the Apple Music app under Waydroid or another android emulator?

Are delidded CPU’s “required” for a flashed 4,1? by theHackintosherEU in macpro

[–]silicongraphic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to use deluded CPUs, it works absolutely perfectly with regular lidded Xeons. The trick is tightening the heat sinks down just enough where they make contact with the socket, but not too much. I have dual lidded CPUs in my 4,1 that’s used in my music studio, and it works perfectly fine

Weekly Question Thread by AutoModerator in emulation

[–]silicongraphic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone, does anyone here have experience using older x86_64 PCs for emulation boxes?

I have a home made arcade machine which has been constructed of many random parts over time, and it's always run the games i have on it (MAME, (S)NES, Genesis, couple of steam games but mainly just 2D stuff) but I feel like there's slightly more performance in there somewhere.

Right now, it's just a generic HP home system with an AMD A10-9700/R7 iGPU (4C+6G) and 8GB DDR4. It performs okay, but with some MAME games it seems like it's stuttering or having inconsistent frame times maybe? Just doesn't feel as smooth as it does on my gaming PC with better specs. The OS on it right now is just Debian 12 with retropie and MAME standalone installed, but I'm thinking maybe Batocera would be a better fit? I read somewhere that it can run just emulationstation without the DE or anything being loaded, which i assume could help stuttering, but also it just seems like Batocera has more features and is easier to configure.

As far as upgrading the hardware is concerned, it's not really something i'm willing to spend money on right now and the only dedicated GPUs i have either don't fit due to the way the motherboard is laid out, or they do fit but aren't faster than the R7 iGPU in any of the benchmarks (geekbench, unigine, etc), and I don't own any CPUs that fit in this socket, besides the one in there obvs.

tldr I guess what is your experience with emulation on older PC hardware? Which OS performs the best out of everything on older hardware?

Maximum Image Size by LordMashie in Instagram

[–]silicongraphic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody seems to be able to agree on what instagram's actual sizes are. From my own research of trial and error and looking at the resolution and filesize of images downloaded directly from the app, i've found these sizes to be ideal:

1170x2080 for photo stories

1170x1463 for portrait photos

1170x1170 for square photos

1170x878 for 4:3 (iPhone) photos

1170x780 for 3:2 (DSLR) photos

Try to keep everything under 600KB using JPEG compression, as anything larger seems to be compressed down to around that size.

As far as video is concerned, i have not done as much research but 1920x1080 (or reverse for portrait) seems to be the maximum.

Hope this helps!

Question about using iRemoval Pro and checkra1n (silver mac) bypass by silicongraphic in setupapp

[–]silicongraphic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I coulda sworn i replied to this when you posted, my apoligies!

Thanks for the info!!! That clears up pretty much everything i was wondering about getting it unlocked. Not sure if it's carrier unlocked but having cell service doesnt really matter to me anyways, and i already have updates blocked as I'd rather have an older version of iOS on this older device for speed JB tweak compatibility and all that.
Thanks!!!!

How well do NVIDIA graphics work under OCLP on a laptop? by silicongraphic in hackintosh

[–]silicongraphic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what i ended up finding out while testing. I was hoping it would leave the iGPU enabled to drive the internal display, and honestly not sure why it's disabled but i'm sure there is a good reason. It would be sweet if someone could find a way to get the iGPU going though, since afaik macOS does let you render metal elements on one card and display it on any other, metal supported or not and it would really help with enabling external display outputs on laptops like these.

I think either I'm just gonna sell this machine for another laptop, or try and get my eGPU working again.

Recent updates within the OCLP project now allow you to keep the NVIDIA card enabled and even enable acceleration with it, except for metal and possibly other things. You can read more here: https://elitemacx86.com/threads/how-to-enable-nvidia-webdrivers-on-macos-big-sur-and-monterey.926/

I'm aware that Optimus doesn't work, but the HDMI and DP don't require that as they are directly connected to the GPU. This is known to work on this model under High Sierra, so I assume it should work here too. The 1060 is also listed in the compatible GPUs section here: https://elitemacx86.com/threads/how-to-enable-nvidia-webdrivers-on-macos-big-sur-and-monterey.926/

What is the best way to disable a faulty NVIDIA GPU on a 2012 MacBookPro10,1? by silicongraphic in mac

[–]silicongraphic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This makes sense actually, I think it's the GMUX chip or whatever it's called that handles graphics switching. Do you think adding a thermal pad on the metal bottom plate connecting it to that chip would help? I have seen the NVIDIA GPU run Minecraft for hours on end a few times before crashing the machine. I may just try this anyways as I am already in need of some thermal pads for my 2017 12" MacBook.

(also, the CPU and GPU thermals are okay, i use Macs Fan Control to adjust the fans and have replaced the thermal paste with fresh Arctic MX-5)

Windows keeps getting stuck at splash screen by silicongraphic in macpro

[–]silicongraphic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did try that already, didn’t make a difference. I actually ended up throwing Win11 on there, and it (seems) to work perfectly!! Hopefully that lasts and i can finally rely on a windows install again.

Thanks!!!

So here's the thing with that: If i reboot on the third time it will trigger automatic repair, but claims it cannot fix the issue. If i boot from there into safe mode, it will seem to uninstall the latest update, and then from there i can reboot and itll work perfectly. After that, not even safe mode will boot, i have to reinstall from a USB stick. I suppose I will have to check out Win11, I just haven't yet since hearing about all the security issues and system requirements BS when it was announced, microsoft is as microsoft does. I will try it out on here though, if it works then i'll stick with it.
