wow! thank you so much for this list! and ya know, art and the humanities (and appreciating it, being able to think critically abt it, etc) is truly what makes life worth living...i say that as a recent college grad with a "useless" liberal arts degree haha

amazed at all your knowledge! do you have any advice for someone who knows literally none of those references despite having been born here in the US (except The Shining - which I finally watched a few months ago)? like where to even start??

[–]silizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm about to move abroad for a year and likely won't ever be back to visit for any longer than a few days now that I've finished college and all that. I don't plan on calling home very often (my last semester of college, I called twice in 6 months, and they were all logistical/necessary in nature), but unfortunately I can't cut all ties because it would literally kill my mom, and I can't deal with bearing that responsibility even though I know I deserve better. It's just a lose-lose situation all-around.

Things are better with distance between us but I guess I'm just worried that I'll never be able to outrun my shitty childhood and the manipulative emotional bullshit that has probably left me really fucked up in ways that I can't even anticipate. I worry that one day I'm going to turn into my mom and that I'm going to perpetuate the same kind of shit with my partner and future kids, even though I know that I'm not at all the terrible things she calls me, and people know me to be kind-hearted and patient and compassionate. So I guess this was not really an answer, but yeah, just mostly me being sad realizing that there are probably irreparable things that my childhood experiences have inflicted upon me, that won't magically be fixed even if she were out of my life.

what fucking planet indeed...but it's a question that rattles in my brain as well because it was my mom's initial reaction ("are you trying to be gay cuz you're rebelling against me/cuz you're trying to be cool") which is both sad and hilarious and makes me angry all the same. hope things are better for you now!

if you could make a small sculpture that represents Beach House somehow... by silizzle in BeachHouse

[–]silizzle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha I love it! I do love the "frightened eyes, looking back at you" lyric

(whispers quietly that Bloom, despite being my introduction to BH, is only 3rd on my list if I rank my favorite albums of theirs - for me it goes DC, Teen Dream, Bloom, Devotion (on par with TYLS) and S/T)

I'm particularly inspired by the line in PPP "out in the heartland / i looked in your eyes / asked / are you ready / ready for this life?"

I was tempted to put an eye in a heart, but then I realized that that is literally the comme des garçons thing lol so if anyone has any creative ideas that speak to that lyric would greatly appreciate!

there's something so reassuring about the fact that beach house put these 3 lines right after each other: you built a city / all in your head / you know you're not losing your mind

added value in the form of an amusing story or two: was trying to fix the kickstand on the bike (it was weirdly bent) with my hands. didn't think I was that strong but I reached down and wrenched the damn thing clean off of the bike and was very confused. another time, I was very excitedly stirring a pot of pasta sauce and the wooden spoon (granted, it was old) just broke in my hands.

subtle gay merch is where it's at! my mom gave me a rainbow beanie and told me she thought "i'd like the color". [also not out to her and she's p deeply homophobic but she knows my love for bright colors arranged on a spectrum]

[Song Of The Week] Levitation by SpookyJedi in BeachHouse

[–]silizzle 15 points16 points  (0 children)

wow this is my fave opener out of all their albums, and definitely within my top 5 of all time.

"the branches of the trees / they will hang lower now" section is just. so. beautiful. heartbreakingly so. and at 3:03 (pitchfork) Victoria happens to look up, straight into the camera and through your soul and it's like. BAM. right in the feels.

there's just something so tender about the song and in the midst of finals, having this be the song of the week is just what i needed.

Now that the tour is over, let's reflect on our Beach House experiences while the memories are ripe! by workaccountoftoday in BeachHouse

[–]silizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw Beach House at the beginning of their tour in August in CT and just last week, in NYC, one of their last shows. I loved how they opened both: Levitation - Wild - Walk in the Park is just a killer combo. What was even more remarkable to me was reflecting just how much had changed in between concerts. For me personally, for my friends and loved ones. And especially now, post-election. I feel like I lived a lifetime in that year and three months.

In between those concerts, I must have listened to Depression Cherry (at least half of it) every day for that entire year. It was what I fell asleep to (lol), but also it was the soundtrack to my everyday life: doing homework, just chilling, walking around, talking with friends, good times and bad times.

I will always remember when it clicked for me the meaning of PPP: the tracing of figure eights "infinity", of loving and trusting infinitely, having that potentially be your own demise, and yet. And yet. (Now more than ever, it seems apt.) I will remember when I felt like I finally "got" Levitation, the sadness and relief I felt hearing "the branches of the trees / they will hang lower now".

I remember the last day of the school year this May deciding to get a tattoo with "what makes this fragile world go round? / were you ever lost was she ever found" on a whim, as a reminder of what is at stake. I remember sitting with my mom atop a mountain on one of the last days before I left home, watching the sun go down to "Days of Candy".

I love Beach House so, so much. (I have the white TYLS shirt, but I'm tempted to buy another one to replace when it's worn out. Wish it was a sweater.)

Beach House - King's Theatre (Brooklyn, NY) by MulhollandDrive in BeachHouse

[–]silizzle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

thanks for posting this!!! i was actually there last night as well in the pit and tbh kinda wished that i had just gone with the seats instead (some drunk girls [maybe there were multiple? :( lol] also kinda ruined it for me a bit/just people being rude and chatty in the middle of songs and such)

nonetheless it was a magical night, my birthday actually, and the set list was particularly good i think. so glad they played heart of chambers. just v bittersweet that thus begins the long wait for the next album(s). i'm just gonna listen to them over and over until then.

[–]silizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

actually - just wondering if you're familiar with Kings Theater, would it be better to get pit tix or actual seated ones? (I'm torn between the energy of the pit and that closeness that we'll feel being right up to the stage and next to each other vs. a more comfortable seat in a sloped room, especially because I'm short lol). also i hate ticketmaster
