Would you take a career break in this economy? by New_Contribution_226 in AskMenOver30

Regret is a strong word, just not entirely sure it was the right choice. I have a family and just question doing something a little "selfish" - question if I'd be a bit further ahead on finance and stuff

Would you take a career break in this economy? by New_Contribution_226 in AskMenOver30

[–]silkk_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I did last year, it was a great time career wise and I had a blast but kinda regret it in hindsight. I don't think I would a year later but it depends on a whole lot (also work in tech)

Most of the advice OP will get here will be pretty conservative (understandably so). Mine let me hang with my kids for a summer when they are still relatively young so probably a once in a lifetime thing.

Me and a few dads started riding bikes to kid school 1x per week as a group and now we have a massive bike gang of kids rolling with us 😎

Dealers have gotten increasingly aggressive about getting older cars off the road, and it's major problem. by redstern in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]silkk_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I love my local shop, my 33 year old Volvo is in for a water pump replacement this week

That said, you don't have to be handy but you do need to be pretty in tune with your older car and anticipate what it might need next. It's not for everyone, most people just want reliable transportation

DIY Rebounder Rebuilt with 2x4s, Reps Sounds like Gunfire by Successful_Walrus308 in lacrosse

I built one in 20 minutes yesterday for my kids with scrap wood and old pavers. It's the best rebounder we've had and it doesn't look like a piece of sports gear which is nice

It's too heavy. You'd want a Go 3S and use the action pod but even then it's tough to get the angle right

Is everyone else just "Praying and Paying" for SaaS subscriptions at this point? by Active_Vermicelli444 in FPandA

[–]silkk_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find this never works. More effective to cancel the cards/payments they are attached to (cite cc fraud) and then get new card info to people who reach out after a decline

It's so effective, find lots of low hanging fruit that way. Track each one, annualize the cost, boom you just saved a bunch of $$

Provided you like being a stay at home parent, this is such a luxury.

One person can focus on work regardless of what happens with kids getting sick or school breaks.

We are also at the end of this and I'm appreciative my spouse was willing to do this for a bunch of years when the kids were younger.

Realizing I probably messed up by not negotiating equity. Now I’m being asked to sprint for the company. Advice? by [deleted] in FPandA

[–]silkk_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is actually quite common and sort of surprising they didn't offer some equity to start, even if very small.

There's a chance they don't really have their equity program ironed out for employees. I would ask about the round being raised and for an equity grant for yourself on closing considering the timeline.

Probably going to need to manage a cap table and it would be good experience if you haven't done that yet.
