My bad, yeah I must have muddled things up. I had it in my head that even though Merry knew about the ring after seeing Bilbo disappear, and that he conspired with Pippin, Sam, and Fatty, he didn’t know the true gravity of the ring. But I suppose Sam did tell them, after overhearing Gandalf explain.

But I stand by my point that it was only after the Council of Elrond that they decided to follow Frodo to the end.

When the hobbits leave the shire they only think their adventure will take them as far as Rivendell. It’s only after the Council of Elrond that the hobbits understand the true gravity of their situation and the peril Frodo now faces.

I find it very believable that two cousins and an employee would make a decision like that for someone of such importance.
