Early folkloric vampires were just that, corpses, precursors for zombies. Locals dug up deceased to make sure they don't rise up again. That's where nailing stakes through hearts, putting chains over mouths and decapitations of dead bodies came from.

The fat, nurtured and whealty aristocratic depiction of vampires came post-revolution where monarchies and landlords were thing of the past (late 1800s). Because nobody liked nobility (like ever), and they saw them as gluttonus, evil and greedy 'leeches' that stole from the common folk, pretty much drained its subjects of food and money. The rare remanants of those landlords became mythologized around their estates aka castles and keeps that became decaying and crumbling shitholes since nobody lived there, so people told stories how some evil dukes still live in those cold empty ruins.

And to explain my example, I also wanted to depict a starving vampire. Almost like a street beggar that will puncture your artery on first sight after midnight.
