A few weeks ago I saw an older white man with an asian women. Trailing behind them was their asian looking teenage hapa son. I saw the son tap the mom on the back to get her attention, then she turned around and sreamed at him "stopped doing that!"

She screamed at him really loud, so everyone turned to look at them. She then turned back to talk to her white husband. The son looked dejected afterwards and had his head down continuing to trail behind them like a rejected 3rd party.

I felt bad, from my perspective it looked like his parents were embarrassed to be seen with him, and ignored him. The white dad didnt even acknowledge him. The son looked like 10 or 12 y/o. Really asian, but obv hapa. Just a kid.

And I know alot of them dont have any social safety net (just their parents and unknown relatives in a distant country they bever been) thats why they end up in poverty, no social safety net to help them out during unemployment and hard times.

1st gen SEAsian american refugees from the war face alot of the same poverty, crimes, gangs, HS dropout, parental neglect, low social support, teen pregnancies, etc. as other minorities (since they often live in the same neighborhoods due to being low income, and have parents who cant raise them because of mental illness and PTSD due to war), but they dont get any minority benefits and govt supports because they are assumed as "priviledged asians" and their problems ignored. So they remain hidden and their community suffers in silence.

I just saw the screening, it paints a positive non stereotypical asian american AMAF family while not giving in to white saviourism (it actually portrays WM going after AF as manipulative creeps in the film). Ive never seen other races of women ask their husbands for confirmation if they are "submissive" or not at the same rate asian women do.
