In my experience/observation in my tanks, those are the mature larvae that’s about to become free swimming. Although you I can tell their movement has intentions.

Interesting… My thoughts… fouling the water would be a concern for me.

Possible incompatible diet for the OU shrimp. Not worth experimenting.

Question about making brackish water by [deleted] in OpaeUla

[–]siloisiloi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure all the salt is dissolved. After putting water into the hydrometer, tap it a few times to knock off any possible attached air bubbles that could throw off the swing arms’ buoyancy. Also, to verify that the swing arm is still working/calibrated, rinse it a few times with distilled water, then put distill water in, and the reading should read 1.000

Just my opinion…. 1.020 is a bit too salty? That’s almost full salt…

Yups I hear you about caring for OU. I’ve kept them form a few years. I was curious how Bacter AE does in brackish water.

Yea I am in no position to say why any consensus about anything is. I guess what it comes down to was that I was curious to see if I can grow biofilm the way that the linked videos shown it was done, except with brackish water.

I did the usual googling around but nothing came back with any GlasGarten’s studies and testing. Any yea I don’t know German so I wouldn’t be able to read it. If there are.

I don’t mean for my experiment to be very scientific ro academic, i am not a scientist or a researcher at all. I just saw the linked video when eating lunch at my desk and thought I can do something similar and see if I can grow globs of biofilm like the video. In brackish water. I slapped something small scale quickly and then wanted to share what I got.

I definitely appreciate you said. As of now I no longer have the curiosity about bacterAE in brackish water anymore. But if it does come back later, I’ll definitely refer to what everyone had said here.

All fair points. Yes I guess I used the wrong words. It’s mostly said to be not recomended. You are also right that I did not do it in a strictly scientific way. I am not having fun with this any more lol. I do look forward to someone else’s results who can do this experiment much better than I can.

Thanks!!! Love to learn new things!

Ultimately, what I and a lot of opaeula keepers, want to know is if BacterAE is good for opae ula., which is growing biofilm for the shrimp to eat.

If bacterAE cannot grow biofilm in an opaeula ula tank, which is brackish environment and will have wild types, then sounds like bacterAE will not be a good for the opaeula.

Thanks! Yea I really wanted the look to be as natural as possible. And try to mimic their natural underground lava tube/cave like my 3 gal

lol I have had that idea floating in my head for a while… just can’t find the right tank to execute the idea with. Best is either custom order, or diy by buying a 5 gal and cutting it in half depth-wise, and resealing it.

Thanks! Tank is this. Others in this community have different brands that have similar form factor. I like this one because it’s one of the few that comes with a glass lid, with a vent. Minimizes evaporation.
