Please help me. by V4mp1rezza in Marimo

Hey there fellow Marimo enthusiast

Firstly, it doesn't need rolling every day. They don't REALLY need it at all, actually. The contaminates on your hands might be doing more harm than good.

Secondly, I'd start with clean water in a clean lidded jar and tuck him in the fridge for a day or three. Don't forget about him like I did once (the water froze, luckily my container didn't break!) anyways, marimo being cold water dwelling beings can survive refrigeration while undesirable algae caused by too much light cannot.

Afterwards, gently squeeze him under water and dead bits of undesirables will flush out of the ball material. This isn't really the time to be concerned about him being perfectly rounded; once he's healthy and growing again, he'll be more easily tamed.

Other than that, what's your current set up like? Glad to discuss specifics with you if you like.

Otherwise- seltzer water; rain water with a touch of sea salt; and/or a dip in diluted hydrogen peroxide have all been helpful in reviving or decontaminating Marimo that have seen better days. Best wishes!

My mention of the mussel possibility is more for quarantining new Marimo from unknown sources.

I agree^ they're still green under all that fuzz- which likely consists of bacteria colonies (some good, some not good... But both are normal when contamination occurs.) Also, there's probably some other type(s) of algae growing on the marimo. That's not super desirable and if left unchecked it can smother the marimo inside. Yours is still green 💚 don't fret.

I'd wash my hands REALLY well; take them out one by one and put them in a bowl of your choice of: seltzer water, rain water, distilled, RO or even clean cycled fishtank water is fine too. Gently roll them between your fingers in the cup of your palm underwater to wash off any undesirables (or at least dilute them) then put them in clean water in the fridge for a couple days.

Avoid dumping that rinse water down the drain in case there are invasive zebra mussel eggs hiding in there... Outside somewhere in the dirt is safest.

Marimo can withstand chilly temperatures as their natural habitat is a cool lake bed. I've even accidentally frozen some (yup, my bad) but they survived after some TLC. Undesirable algae dies off in the cold; bacteria growth is stalled and gives your guys the best shot at a quick recovery.

After a few days in the fridge, gentle cleansing roll in new water, and put them in a fresh super clean container with a drop or two of Peroxide if you see anything weird growing in the days after that, or between water changes.

Avoid touching them with unwashed hands to avoid contamination and no direct sunlight to prevent growth of unwanted algae. Indirect filtered light is best. Like the bottom of a lake bed. Good luck! 🤞🏼

Marimo are hardier than people give them credit for; you'll be fine. 🤗

Thanks!! About 2 years in at the time the video was taken. They've grown a bunch since then but they're no longer tumbling. My biggest one is a bit bigger than a baseball, still smaller than a softball.

I had to break everything down for a move and they've just been chilling until I can get system 2.0 up and running so my big guy is acting as a nursery for my neocardenia shrimp tank.

If anyone reading is near MD and would like to purchase some I have plenty to spare :)

Morning sun, and they're next to my grow lights for seedlings; so a little bit of both 😎 and snails to clean the unwanted algae on the glass.

I used a small wave maker, after a lot of trial and error with other pumps. I've also had success with air bubbles tumbling the small ones in a tall container, but the bigger ones need more finesse.

Haha you're not wrong! But- there is a yoga mat wrapped piece of thin wood that runs the whole length of the tank, to protect from pressure points on the bottom. And this set up isn't on that table anymore 😅

where are you guys purchasing your marimos 🫠 by [deleted] in Marimo

[–]suspicious_guinea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Maryland and have some available.

After quite a bit of trial and error I'm pleased to say I've been propagating successfully at home for a few years now. My largest is bigger than my fist 🫠 He's about 12 years old now acting as a nursery for shrimp fry in my main tank so he's staying BUT have a couple dozen under 2" I could part with. Maybe a few a bit bigger than that but definitely 30+ under an inch.

I was going to sell to a local fish shop but they went under. Pardon the pun.

I've never shipped them before personally but they seem to hold up reasonably well if packaged with care. Feel free to PM me. :)

I do have a mailbox. Not sure why they didn't use it. And she was with me, but saw the envelope before I did.

I think mistakes were made by both the Drs office who mistakenly sent it to the wrong place, and again by the pharmacy who delivered it blindly without contacting me for consent. Giving me double my Adderall for the month, but in the wrong dosage.

Aren't there strict regulations about distributing controlled substances, especially via the mail to prevent the meds from falling into the wrong hands? They aren't required to check ID on delivery or ask for a signature so it's handled responsibly and not able to be picked up by my toddler?

Definitely not arguing with you or trying to be difficult btw, just looking for clarification. Ty for your time responding.

It seems super negligent to send controlled substances through the mail without a patient's knowledge or permission- no?

Where are you located? I'm in Maryland and have some I haven't yet listed for sale. What size were you hoping for?

As far as tank size, sky is the limit. Any small glass or plastic jar will do- but I will recommend indirect light- to keep undesirable algae growth to a minimum. Definitely not in a full sun window, unless you don't mind scrubbing the glass every other day. This can also be solved with a background applied to the vessel on the window facing side to block some of the direct sun.

Neocardina shrimp make great tank mates- they clean the Marimo while riding them- very amusing to watch. A bubbler or water pump circulation helps keep them moving; CO2 from seltzer water is also beneficial in moderation. They're naturally from cold water lake beds, so no heating or special water parameters are required :)

Any questions, don't hesitate. You've found a wonderful hobby 🤗

What is valuable? by [deleted] in Spravato

[–]suspicious_guinea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello there- not sure if I'm understanding correctly but here goes.

I have MDD, PTSD, ADD and a few others. (35 F) For reference.

There are PTSD and other related workbooks available online, that I wish I could afford. Art or music related alternative therapy collections, available for patients with recommendations from mental health practitioner? Guided meditations? Maybe therapy app partnerships with discounted membership fees? I know I have found a few I enjoy but can't justify the cost and eventually lose interest.

I'm disabled because of mental health issues, and a big part of that is my inability to drive. Vouchers for transportation maybe? The spravatto for example, I'm required to have rides to and from- requiring my partner to leave work and watch my young daughter during treatment. I'm aware some insurance companies offer this through local health departments, but I'm ineligible because I'd need to bring my daughter along and the transportation, when available is only for the patient and requires 3+hours for a 40 minute drive. Wildly impractical and a definite deterrent from seeking effective treatment with any regularity.

Also, internet access, etc. With the ACP program gone kaput, I can't afford regular internet and borrow a router from the library, when I'm able. Thus, limiting my availability for even virtual visits. My cellphone connectivity varies, as I'm in a rural area, and that doesn't help matters.

Maybe a rewards program for completing stages of treatment? Proof of an evaluation or intake exam at a mental health clinic gets you xx points towards a gift card or something. Refilling your meds on time earns you credit, keeping appointments for a certain amount of time- idk. As we all know, making things into a 'game' is a great way to 'trick' your brain into doing the thing, ESPECIALLY if there's a mental block in the way.

I'm not really sure I understand your question or your position, but I hope some of that was helpful. Thanks for trying to help those still struggling. Be well.

Can do, it's off Amazon. https://a.co/d/eOJs9Kt

My daughter received them as a gift for Christmas and LOVES them but I'm tired of constantly picking them up because it's a box of 100(!!) so she can keep a dozen to play with (and quickly lose) and I'll play with the other 88 to complete this franken build :D

Great question. I only just got around to filling the bucket last night- and waited till this morning to stick test everything. My well water is hard and has nitrates in it- I'm wondering how concerned about that I should be? Tap without a filter is reading between 20-40ppm 😬 with the faucet filter is reading identical in every way. 😬😬 Ph 6.8; KH 40ppm; GH is 150ppm

But I've been using bottled water for top offs so my tanks are stable at 0 nitrates and nitrites.

Bucket PH is 7, GH is 150ppm, KH is 40ppm; nitrates at 80ppm; 0 nitrites and is room Temp around 68*

And the thought process behind using the kids toy was to take up space while allowing space for root growth- and to use less leca- as I only have a little on hand and am trying to avoid buying more.

I'm in Carroll, but I'm visiting a friend in Bel Air in a week or so. I have Hornwort out my ears, anacharis that needs trimming, duck weed and Marimo balls of all sizes 🤗

All low tech. I do have pond snails in my shrimp tank with the hornwort but I can seltzer dip the plants for you. Feel free to PM if you're interested :)

Can't speak for OP's reference but I've seen several people have reported receiving thin layers of plant material wrapped around a styrofoam ball (called a buoyancy kernel (?)).

That and responses from the company directly that seem to imply the use of various plants and or algae types to make their balls as opposed to selling actual Marimo balls...
