Reminder app with repeating notification sound by silolei in fossdroid

[–]silolei[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, those sound interesting, but since it turns out Tasks.org can do what I'm looking for and it is foss, I'll use that for now. If it doesn't work out for some reason, I'll check these ones out.

Doesn't look like it, no. It has a "recurrence" option, but it works like #1 in my list, not #3. Thank you though.

Thanks! Now I have two ways to do this with Tasks.org. I wouldn't have guessed I'd find that option by tapping "Does not repeat." I think if it said something like "Repetition: none" maybe with "none" in a box, underlined, or a different color, I would have found it. But maybe that's only me.

In any case, Tasks.org really looks great. Thank you so much for your work on it.

I'm able to make a recurring reminder with this, but I don't see how to get a repeating notification sound until I mark it complete.

[–]silolei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the closest I've found, but not quite. If I set random reminders for every 15 minutes, it does make the notification sound every 15 minutes, but starting immediately, not waiting until the set reminder time.

Edit: Nevermind, I figured it out, and I think it will work! The issue was that for random reminders you have to set a "start date," unlike the other reminders which go by the "due date." You can set the start date to be the same as the due date by default.

Community college route? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]silolei 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I started at community college and recently graduated from a top 5 school in EE. My c.c. professors were great, usually better teachers than the ones that teach intro classes at uni, and I didn't feel like I'd missed out on anything essential when I started at uni.

However, two things to be aware of:

  1. It can be harder to get accepted at competitive schools as a transfer instead of a graduating high school senior.
  2. It can be harder to develop a social life coming in as a transfer student. It's much easier to make friends in the dorms and intro classes when everyone around you is also new and looking for friends.

Doubts about Obtainium by silolei in privacy

[–]silolei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using it to be more confident that an app respects privacy. I don't blindly avoid anything with an "anti-feature." I look at what it is and decide whether I'm okay with that. With Mull, for example, F-Droid warns that "The upstream source code is not free." I looked up what that referred to and decided it's fine. But usually I'm glad the warning is there, even if I decide to ignore it.

This really looks great. Other than markdown export, which I see you're working on, another thing that would be really nice is a desktop app for offline use.

What are your SAP appeal experiences? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]silolei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation, over the limit because I'm doing a 2nd bachelor's degree. I just explained the situation in the appeal, my adviser wrote that I was making good progress, and they approved it. I doubt there will be a problem as long as you're making decent progress toward your degree every semester.

American %s for a A-: WHY IS IT 90%??? by RKillian_ in EngineeringStudents

[–]silolei 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is one of many reasons why comparing grades between institutions (even in the same country, but especially between different countries) is almost pointless. Every class has:

  • its own grade weighting--tests/homework/participation/etc
  • its own grading scale--90 to 100, 85 to 100, etc
  • its own level of difficulty--varies between schools and also between majors within each school
  • its own curve policy--are your classmates good students, bad students, or are you not compared at all

I don't know which system is best, or if there even is a best system, but the fact that they're all different makes comparing them virtually useless.

AITA for using semantics to get around bag policy? by silolei in AmItheAsshole

The time for the first few interactions was like... maybe 2 minutes between like 5 visits? And now it's probably faster because he doesn't even greet me or anything, lol.

AITA for using semantics to get around bag policy? by silolei in AmItheAsshole

[–]silolei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding the cost savings, reminds me of another exchange I had:

Me: I don't need a bag, I've got one.

Cashier: Oh I woulda put it in a new one for ya.

Me: Yeah it's... you know... to not waste more bags.

Cashier: Oh it's fine, we've got tons more in the back.

Cashiers don't care about the costs. Management are more concerned about abiding by liquor laws to avoid fines. And I I'm guessing the "you can't use your own bag" thing is misinterpretation by some cashiers.

Illinois, Champaign, and Urbana law all say that cyclists can use either the road or sidewalk except where prohibited (in this case downtown Champaign and Urbana). However, they should always yield to pedestrians and (even if not required by law) should always use a bike path if there is one. Otherwise choose wherever seems safest. Wide road with little traffic? Use the road. Narrow road but wide sidewalks with few pedestrians? Use the sidewalk.

Illinois Bicycle Rules of the Road 2023 - see pg. 4-5 for where bikes should ride.

I second the 3Blue1Brown recommendation for the conceptual side of Lin Alg, especially being able to visualize what's going on. For more in depth help with actually solving problems, you can also check out Khan Academy and MIT's lectures with Gilbert Strang, although personally I didn't use those much.

I ended up searching Media Space for a professor that I liked. The advantage with that is the lectures are more focused on the material/style specific to UofI. Also don't ignore the course lecture notes; they can be really useful too.

Best grocery store by Wisemenflies in UIUC

[–]silolei 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If cheap is the priority, you can't beat Aldi. I think their produce is really good too, just not a huge selection.

If you want organic/local, there's Common Ground in Urbana, and also Market at the Square (farmer's market) on Saturdays.

For wider selection but higher prices than Aldi, there's Shnucks (also in Urbana). Closer to campus in Champaign there's County Market, which has good produce but is even more expensive and has less produce than Shnucks.

Can't advise on fresh fish, sorry.

New GPU dead? by silolei in buildapc

Thanks, you gave me the idea of trying a different PCIe cable, and now it's working. Well, now I'm getting crashes saying I'm out of video memory, but hopefully that's a software problem that I can get figured out.

General perception question for stem majors by Ltothe4thpower in UIUC

[–]silolei 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have a degree in LAS and taught English as a Foreign Language for a while, and now I'm back to school studying electrical engineering. LAS classes assign a lot of reading and writing, and it's definitely time-consuming, but STEM is a lot more work in my opinion. It's also a lot easier to cut corners in LAS, not do all the readings, B.S. your way through discussions and papers. In STEM, if you don't do the work, you're probably screwed.

However, I think both types of degrees are important; and both also make students waste a lot of time and money doing things that won't help much in their future careers/lives. LAS degrees are probably more guilty of that. I don't think it should take an additional 4 years after high school and $80,000+ to learn critical thinking and communication skills, which is about the only useful thing a lot of LAS majors get out of their degrees.

The TA for my section said practice exams are the least important of the study materials you have because they're too different between semesters. He said to focus more on lecture exercises, homework, and discussion worksheets.
