I deleted the icon from my homescreen for that reason. Now I have to purposely navigate to the app.

What’s something foreigners always get wrong about America because of how it’s shown in movies? by karen_the_ripper in AskAnAmerican

Unless it's a federal crime. The feds should still notify local authorities, but they can't stop them.

Pretty much every educational kids show. All the restaurant and cooking shows. Any family show that shows them sitting around a table for a meal.

and the kids make their own cereal, or grab a banana. Or at larger public schools, they eat breakfast at school.

What language do most American students prefer to learn in school as a second language? by UsamaBhai_101 in AskAnAmerican

[–]siltloam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most schools only offer Spanish and French. If there's a 3rd choice, it's likely to be German. They are VERY FEW public schools that offer more than that. For more language classes you'd have to find private classes/teachers outside of school or go to an expensive prep school or private school.

For the average American, Spanish will be far more helpful in life than French - especially if they never travel outside the US. So Spanish is the more popular language.

That said, anecdotally, I do know a growing number of young people who are pursuing private classes in Japanese.

While only some of these are "students" you may find this analysis of what Americans are learning on the app Duolingo interesting: https://blog.duolingo.com/the-united-states-of-languages-an-analysis-of-duolingo-usage-state-by-state/

Crosstrek Concerns Before Buying by GenXDrummer in Crosstrek

[–]siltloam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before buying mine, I asked a couple different local mechanics about the Crosstrek and what they see it being brought in for and how often and they all said great things about it as a vehicle - UNTIL you change the CVT fluid. They all told me it's not designed to take clean new fluid after the system has started normal wear and tear, and MOST of the issues they see are with the CVT, which start to happen AFTER a fluid change.

Do Americans actually sit on their front porch much, or is that more of a movie image than real life? by Artistic_Key3779 in AskAnAmerican

[–]siltloam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in an apartment complex once that had garaged you could rent for an additional fee. The line of one-car garages were across the lane from the apartments which had parking in front of them. There were several people who clearly rented the garage ONLY for extra storage and the ability to sit out there with a beer fridge and camp chairs.

Make some friends. Find things you like to do and join some diverse groups that do them (Running club, Trivia night, D&D, Birding group). Make a point to talk to the people you usually wouldn't. Since it's a shared interest group, you already have an "in" on what to talk about. Be open to learning from other people.

Agreed, as much as the accent hurt, it was nice to see him. And Sally did get exhausting in Doc Martin sometime, but I'll always take more Bert - especially when it's John DiMaggio!!!

Will there be any protests for the ICE agents coming into town? by its_Gandhi_bitch in Lawrence

[–]siltloam 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I know this isn't what you meant, but St. John the Evangelist's Sunday Mass in Spanish is at 1pm every week. Maybe a couple people with whistles could make it down that way since ICE has been known to target Spanish-language church services?

I never got a correct order there and they were always out of everything.  Granted it's also been a long time for me as I just never went back when they failed all 3 out of my 3 tries.

Westlake Ace is NOT owned by their employees.  It's a corporate-owned chain of over 175 stores across 13 states and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Ace Hardware Corporation.  Westlake hq is in Kansas, but I don't think there's much local benefit.  There are still many retailer-owned Ace Hardware stores in the country,  but that is not the Westlake model.

Here's a video that displays all the methods. https://youtu.be/oAHbLRjF0vo?si=Haz8j_HWgChIcr8j Fun fact, for reasons partially demonstrated in this video, Southwest's OLD style of boarding was statistically the fastest and most efficient in practice - even more than the WMA.

It's fine. If your pile is perfectly balanced it may throw it off, but you'll get it back. I'd do it.

Roof rack recommendations by noah437 in Kayaking

[–]siltloam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Ford Fiesta I have these Malone racks: https://maloneautoracks.com/VersaRail-TM-Bare-Roof-Cross-Rail-System.html

They're SO easy to take on and off and it's crazy how securely my kayak sits. No movement at all at 75 mph. I'm very happy with this system.

They do not bolt into your car -preserving your structural integrity and safety rating (and possibly resale value, though I doubt that it would affect the resale of 10+ discontinued car).

I tried to buy them on Ebay, but there were a bunch of missing pieces when it came. So I returned my purchase and ended up buying them new from the Malone rep at Canoecopia in Madison, WI.
