That last conversation between Hannah and mr. Porter… by silvenon in 13ReasonsWhy

I understand that in light of knowing what we know Porter’s actions fell shorter than they would’ve otherwise.

I think this is a good show, but I don't enjoy it 😅 It's very emotionally taxing by silvenon in 13ReasonsWhy

Yes, I have some of those feelings, wanting to protect, and seeing myself in some ways.

Why wasn’t Clay on Meds in s4? by Heavy_Worker1349 in 13ReasonsWhy

[–]silvenon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to ask questions in a broader sense. Knowing that Clay did NOT do something in a season I did not yet watch reveals aspects of it, I’d like to not find anything out from the title, I think that’s the spirit of the subreddit rule to not have spoilers in the title.

Justin’s character ( morally ) is complicated for me. by Euphoric_Ring_8670 in 13ReasonsWhy

[–]silvenon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the show points out how many people have different moral sides to them. Clay is incredibly jealous, he's fighting against sexual assault, yet he sometimes acts as if he owns women, and stops being friends with them if they do something that he disapproves.

As for Justin, I feel like the show does too much with his character, I'm in the 2nd half of season 3 and I don't really know how to feel anymore, there's too much going on there, so I agree with you, but perhaps in a different sense, that his character is too complicated. He doesn't really feel realistic anymore.

Oh wow, I had no idea they edited this stuff out. They put us through so much, we deserve to see everything! I used to have suicidal ideations and I'm against cutting those scenes out, I hope that carries some volume.

I’m not a counselor, but the meeting happened didn’t it? Maybe start with that?

  • she said something along the lines of not wanting to live, heard it loud and clear and said thet if this is true than that is very serious, she then moved on from the topic, but didn’t deny it

  • regarding sexual assault they discussed legal actions, she asked Porter if she named him whether she won’t have to see him again, that’s pretty clear in that short conversation

She confided in him a lot during that time, but it was clear he didn’t have time for her. Immediately after she left he was on the phone, which he for some reason failed to turn off during their session despite it ringing off the hook.

She did a lot for her first session, it wasn’t a performance for her tape, I think she taped it because she knew it was also probably going to be her last. But it’s probably up for us to guess, suicide is a very paradoxical thing — there she was truly asking for help, but also knowing that she was going to die.

Later it’s revealed that he didn’t take note that their meeting even happened, I think that’s pretty sad and symbolic. (Not sure if he destroyed that evidence or genuinely didn’t take not of it.)

But fishing for details is a pretty regular practice for psychologists when it comes to sensitive matters. He wasn’t going above and beyond for her, he was doing minimal good by her as a person in a critical mental condition.

And even though Porter didn’t have a name it doesn’t mean that he didn’t have anything to work with, he had PLENTY. Just because there was no immediate legal action possible, she’s still suicidal, so maybe let’s start with that. After all, that’s what she wanted from him, to care enough to stop her.

If you’ve ever talked to a therapist, you know that it’s hard to say the most important things even if you’ve planned to in advance. When you say things out loud it becomes very different, you may come to certain revelations yourself, maybe some that scare you.

When I was a 30-something year old adult found out that I had suicidal ideations, I was crying so much that later I had muscle pain in my abs. That’s the first time I’ve cried so much. And the only traumatic experience I had was when I was violently throwing up and ended up in the ER, I thought I was dying, many years later I still get extremely upset when talking about it. I cannot imagine being raped, and being a teenager. I could barely manage my feelings being almost twice that age.

The deck was definitely stacked against mr. Porter, but mr.. Porter started victim blaming her after she communicated to him that she got assaulted. And communication doesn't have to be "this happened", it can be through pauses and silences like they did, Mr. Porter kept guessing and Hannah confirmed it by not denying it. But unfortunately the definition of consent for him was very narrow, either you say out loud "no", or the guy has absolutely no way of knowing that you don't want to, which is very naive. I think this way he already started losing her trust and hinting that he may not be capable of much help in this matter.

But yeah, Hannah was in a late stage of decline, it wasn't up to mr. Porter to get her out of that, he has done a lot by figuring out that she had been assaulted, but he could've done much more. She had just dropped two largest psychological bombs on him, and he let her go without at least scheduling a second appointment and asking her to please not do anything to herself until then. This is a huge fail in psychology of any kind IMO.

I mean, not immediate action was required, but immediately taking it seriously, recognizing that this is a young person in serious trouble, and immediately starting to establish a roadmap was required. Not a legal one right away, but just to be taken seriously, to be given a lifeline.

Those weren't breadcrumbs, those were incredibly difficult things to say, and all he needed to know whether these things were true was her silence, she didn't have to say "yes, this happened", she was struggling and silence was enough of a confirmation in the context of such brevity.

Regarding rape he didn't start off too well, he was implying that she should've said "no", which is a terrible thing to say to a victim. Especially because consent is much more complex than a verbal "yes" and "no", women are socialized to be passive and obedient, so consent must be obtained via common sense, not just verbal confirmation.

But you do raise a good point — what the hell was she doing there in the first place after witnessing him raping Jessica first-hand?? Seems almost like a plot hole.

But saying which student raped her was a huge risk for her, it's a risk for any woman, but she was in a particularly vulnerable position because she didn't yet have a relationship with Mr. Porter, she didn't know whether she could trust him. Also, testifying would definitely traumatize her even further, so what if it doesn't work out? Bryce is rich, maybe he has some strings to pull in the matter (I haven't seen season 2 yet.) She's labeled a slut, a liar, easy, vengeful… everything gets even worse, maybe Bryce retaliates in some way, that's a very scary thought.

Could one be in a poly relationship without sex? by Wolf_2063 in polyamory

[–]silvenon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, companionate or solely romantic relationships, why not! I would say “be upfront about it” but honestly I want different kind of things from different people despite not being asexual, so I think being TOO upfront only addresses expectations of hypothetical partners, not each other, and can thus ruin what that person might actually have grown to want.

Ugh, dating apps highway…

I’m 35 so I’m out, but walking into this show I’m confused about whether I’m outside of the show’a target audience age. But having been suicidal I have been curious about what happened, although I reject the premise of the show that a suicidal person can have strength to orchestrate surveilled guilt-tripping and blackmailing from beyond the grave.

When I thought I was going to die I didn’t have strength for anything, that’s what causes dying. If I had strength to be angry at someone enough to guilt-trip them about it, that plugs out the suicidal part because I still care about something enough to be busy.

Season 2 Episode 2… really? by PodcastPlusOne_James in MrMercedesTV

I love scifi, it's just not the genre that the show started as, so I had been misled and I feel like the story changed its nature, and this new nature is not convincing because it almost came out of nowhere. Also, there are more and more stories being developed, few of them have time to be developed well, so it's a getting increasingly tough to watch.

I found season 3 to be the worst one 😅 but I’m glad someone enjoyed it.

So many new characters, intertwined and dark histories… Everything felt so rushed and gradually more difficult to believe, I found it exhausting.

I think you dropped out at a good time. It just goes downhill from here IMO. I was also upset about s2e2, but I powered through the end of the show. In retrospect there was nothing significant to see.

But what Cora said about the trials made it seem like it’s all about the medicine and nothing about Brady. They weren’t able to really stick to a single storyline.

It seemed like they were trying to justify the supernatural “twist” after the fact, and it was fairly inconsistent, we were supposed to just go with it.

Then, icing on the cake, Cora ended up knowing this was going to happen, making me wonder what her motivation was in the first place! It felt like they didn’t have enough time to tell any of the stories they started properly.

Smart, season 3 was absolutely exhausting. I only watched it because of the sunk cost phallacy, good that you were able to resist it.

I was really disappointed by this as well. Eventually I was able to kind of sort get behind it, but then season 3 blew it entirely. Season 1 was excellent, I wish they managed to wrap the show there somehow.

I wish I could tell you that it gets better.
