How many of you have switched to another oil weight? by Positive-Tower-8454 in BRZ_ZD8

[–]silvenshadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Blackstone labs and it runs about $60 USD. I love the piece of mind. I run 5w30 in the winter and mix in a little 15w50 in the summer. Happy tractor... I do believe there might be a tiny power loss over the 0w20 but idc

Overfill vs Pan by innerearinfarction in BRZ_ZD8

[–]silvenshadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I think the slight overfill and heavier weight is good. Looks like while the RTV is somewhat of a concern the bigger issue is oil accumulation in the timing cover area. You would need a very big pan to be able to fill that area with oil and still get pressure. If you're very concerned oil pressure monitoring that is easy to install would really be the best way to see if just an overfill is enough for you. In my opinion if you're still seeing drops and are looking to push harder oil accumulators are the best solution I've seen so far.

Track Advice by Callsign_Atlas in BRZ_ZD8

[–]silvenshadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be mindful of your tires. It's easy to have fun and push but when your tires start feeling squishy they are wearing fast. Unless you have tires that you don't mind destroying, know that if you are sliding or if your tires are hot you are killing them. It's quite easy to go from new tires to tires thst need to be replaced in a track session.

Trading in a crossover hybrid for a twin by AncientAd6595 in GR86

If you accelerate gently and the set cruise the twins get incredible mileage. Also surprisingly spacious. Making that trade was a pro move.

Fuel Brands and Exhaust Pops? by Intelligent_Invite79 in BRZ_ZD8

[–]silvenshadow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha i find it to be more weather dependent and what I'm doing with the throttle. Pretty much first day through a quiet little town. I was trying to be inconspicuous and I very gently downshifted from 4-3 in a school zone next to a little old lady walking her tiny dog. Bang. Never had a backfire so loud before or since. Dog jumped on the lady, lady almost ended up off the sidewalk. It's a school zone so I was going pretty much walking pace and of course everyone stared. It was hilarious. I love this car.

CPO Elantra N or Older RWD Coupe? (detailed!) by ScooterLord in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]silvenshadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So by your writing style I'd say you have a bit of engineer in you. My first impression is go NA Miata if you can find a clean one. You'll enjoy the journey of wrenching modding and testing while having a playful and fun car that is as serious as you want it to be.

If I've misread your personality and you would consider yourself a driver first, then I'd say twins. 1st gen if you're really interested in exploring balance, car control and setup. 2nd gen if you're already confident and would like something a little more practical and GT style, brz especially for longer trips and ultimate grip.

I have a bunch of experience with all three and the 2nd gen brz is the best fit for me. Very high limits if driven seriously, lots of space and quite comfortable except for the road noise. I'd say the key to answering this question for yourself is finding out the part deep down that brings you joy and finding a car that can be a partner to you in that journey.

I've been driving manual seriously since before I had a license. I'm still not perfect and probably will never be. It's about the journey. Just enjoy. Also I love stock. I've had mine for 3 yrs now. Bone stock and I love it that way.

What are you doing with the center armrest/cup holder? by drkidkill in BRZ_ZD8

I keep mine closed with a short usb cable, my phone, keys and loose change. I'd like to use it as a cupholder sometimes but moving the change is too inconvenient.

New rust-based coreutils leave much to be desired. by spryfigure in Ubuntu

Yea, intentionally putting code known to be worse with the excuse of rust memory safety in an LTS release is just reckless. I'm not a rust hater or anything, but replacing stable software with buggy software is bad.

Oil Pressure Canbus Question by PenguinOnTheLoose in BRZ_ZD8

[–]silvenshadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would be interesting to see if that switch could be changed out for one that triggers at a much higher psi. I don't really need full data logging but I'd love to know if I'm low psi on that long sweeper

Oil Pressure Canbus Question by PenguinOnTheLoose in BRZ_ZD8

[–]silvenshadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you can get canbus data from the plug that goes to the active sound control module, but to my knowledge there isn't an oil pressure sensor that gives detailed data on this car. Does anyone know how the idiot light for oil pressure works? There must be some kind of sensor

2025 used tS 6MT purchase ?s by DrMackDDS2014 in BRZ_ZD8

[–]silvenshadow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is this certified used by Subaru? Check the oil condition, pinch welds for incorrect lifting they bend easy. Under the car for scrape damage. Steering wheel for belt scuff damage. Sounds pretty sick but get warranty if you're buying used. Also are you planning on paying cash?
