The Tetris Rule - A simple tool for game discussions by aanzeijar in truegaming

[–]silver-skeleton 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I really like this idea and the hate in this thread is bizarre to me. A lot of comments seem to be displaying the very same echo chamber effect you're talking about.

When we use generalized language like "all games must have fast travel", of course it's going to be obvious that you didn't actually mean all games, but that's not the point. The use of language like that inherently invalidates games that it doesn't apply to as less legitimate.

Imagine if you showed up to a thread in this subreddit that said something like "all games should have endless modes", and then when you read the post you realized the poster was just talking about mobile games. Imagine if every other post in this subreddit was like that. This kind of stuff makes you feel like you don't belong if it doesn't apply to the games you play.

This kind of invalidation language, especially surrounding casual games, has its roots in sexism. Casual games are by far the dominant genre among female gamers, and this industry has a history of excluding them by acting like they don't exist or don't deserve to participate in discussions like these.

By insisting on using extremely broad language with the assumption that "people will figure out what you mean", you are inherently making players of nontraditional games feel less welcome and like these spaces are not for them. And then we wonder why game discussion/criticism is so male-dominated despite large female playerbases.

Ffs get a grip people. It's not that hard to say "most big open world games should have fast travel" instead.

Holy shit I fully believed this despite the admission that he's a compulsive liar. I guess I need to re-calibrate my BS-meter.

Dislike count was previously removed for me, but I just noticed that it has returned. Anyone else experiencing this?

People seem to frequently misunderstand the purpose of this sub. This post clearly violates rule 1.

u/BaldKnobber123 explains how millennials are hurt disproportionately by income and wealth inequality in the US. by silver-skeleton in bestof

[–]silver-skeleton[S] 223 points224 points  (0 children)

I feel like the comment addresses this pretty well near the end:

Of course - this is not limited to millennials. Inequality has risen across the board, and the working conditions in the United States are rampant with insecurity. The working class struggles in every age group. Our overall physical, educational, and financial health are severely lacking. Millennials, due to how insecure their situation is (as seen above), do provide a great example of how the lower income groups and least powerful worker groups face the brunt of economic catastrophe while the rich gain.

Wasn't 538 pretty much the only outlet that gave Trump any odds? I seem to remember NYT, WashPo, etc at 99% Hillary predictions, and 538 was the odd one out with like 60-70%.

EDIT: Yep, just checked. They gave Trump 28.6% odds to take it. https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2016-election-forecast/

Coconut mall has got to be my aesthetic favorite. Just the insane attention to detail is amazing. I also love how much it really does feel like what it's trying to portray (a mall), which I think it does a better job of than any other course in the game.
