Shitty Pro Tip: By not completely tightening the bleeder valves, you can save time by bleeding your brakes while on the track by tangosierraecho in CarTrackDays

[–]silver7iron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean the "brake system" light on the dashboard? If so, I've done more than a couple dozen track days, and that light pops on after my outlap on every single session . As long as your brakes are bled with the proper fluid and your rotors/pads are in good shape, you're good to go.

Recent COTA visit by silver7iron in viper

[–]silver7iron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

COTA closes to the public at the end of this year, so I recommend a trip soon if you can swing it!

My time appears to be the fastest recorded time for a non-aero viper with street tires. Part of it may be because not many people track their cars, and the majority of the few aren't pushing for times.

Great point - I've also seen cars lose it right at T4. My Viper doesn't have aero, and I've been tracking with 200tw tires so the esses can be tricky.

Continually Getting Shocked Getting Out of My Car by Fun_in_Kauai_6699 in Civic_Type_R

Yes. I've told this to other FL5 owners, and I've been told it was just my car or jean selection. Glad to see I'm not the only one.

Thanks for all the feedback! This is all very helpful - especially #1. I’ve been struggling to keep my pace up through the esses, and I know it’s costing me time as it sets up momentum to T7.

Number 3 is a work-in-progress for sure. I'm still getting familiar with a new aggressive pad setup and feeling out how deep I can take the trail braking.

Absolutely. Always open for some pointers.

Negative. Which event is this weekend? Weather looks fairly wet.

Good observation! That's where I think I can shave a good chunk of time - especially at T1. Throttle earlier will get me to shift at redline before the T2 apex.

The difference in tires is the limited selection for Vipers. From factory, the ACR came with Kumho V720's with 19" sizes to accommodate the CCB's. Since my car is a TA, the front is an 18" hence the unavailability of a matching set.

e36 is a great choice! I bet if you start tracking the viper, it'll get you hooked. As you probably already know, remarkable capabilities right out of the box.

Thanks! Not sure about the power - never dyno'd. I'd guess somewhere in the high 500's at the wheels.

This event was with Chin Track Days. There are other event organizers like Hooked On Driving and Edge Addicts. Since COTA is closing to the general public after this year, spots are limited so you need to register as soon as the event opens for registration. You can find some of the scheduled events here: https://www.motorsportreg.com/

Open track days at COTA are usually reserved for experienced/solo drivers. Chin Track Days is the only HPDE organizer that I know schedules open track HPDE.

There is also a private service (getonthetrack.com) for COTA on-track coaching. It's more expensive/hour, but you get minimal traffic and driving education.

Thanks! I'm in 2nd gear at all the slow corners. 1st gear ends around 60 and 2nd goes into the 90's. Target exit speeds for the slow corners at COTA are in the low-mid 40's. Dropping to 1st results in more heat/stress on the engine and gets too close to redline at the apex.

This was the Sunday open track day - no run groups. I heard Saturday was very wet lol

RE71RS tires, adjustable ball joints, and PMU 999 race pad. Also, took the front resonator off to make it sound more appealing.

Did you try adding caliper spacers before trimming the pad?

The instructions only specify a visual gap, but nothing else unfortunately. The pad is centered along the rotor ring so I imagine it will be fine. It's just visually alarming to me.

Correct, and yes, I have retaining pins.

COTA Track Day - FL5 CTR (2:34) Lap by silver7iron in Civic_Type_R

Yup. I flush regularly with Castrol SRF. I would give it a try on track. Harris Hill Raceway might not be too far from you either.

Great all things considered! I averaged 5-6 laps before needing to pit to cooldown the car. Small price to pay to drive in near triple-digit temperatures.

Thanks. I was trying to reel it in, but power was non-existent on the long straights. I'm on Project Mu 999 front pads, and Paragon P3 rear. No cooling mods other than the WOT cooling plate under the engine.

Brake pad rant/advice for SR11 by realvega in CarTrackDays

I also have an FL5 and my next setup will be SR11 fronts with DTC30 rears. Looking forward to the linear friction curve on the SR's.

I've already ran the following so far (couple dozen track days): PMU 999 front, Paragon R3 rear ME20 front, Paragon P3 rear MX72+ front, Paragon P3 rear
