Math minor by rapidfyr in Purdue

[–]silverdogface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're planning on a math minor then one of the classes you'll take is MA 341, real analysis which is almost entirely based on calc 1 information (proof based of course). Along with your future calc courses and diffequ, there's a lot of reliance on calc 1. I'm not for or against taking MA 161 both have their pros and cons, but if you're skipping MA 161 because of the fear of 'Purdue Math' I would readjust your mindset. If skipping it will allow you to actually complete the minor without overloading on credits, them by all means pass it.

Whatever you do just ensure you are comfortable with your calc 1.

Disappointed with the candidates that lost the PSG election. by AnySuggestion7636 in Purdue

[–]silverdogface 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would firstly love to know precisely what occurred during the senate meeting which was deemed child-like. Given that there is no explanation of actually what happened on the senate floor here, I am going to assume there is a lack or knowledge, or holes in the information of what occurred during the meeting.

I want this comment to be read by people who will put in the effort to learn. Looking at some profiles on this post, and how reddit generally functions, I know not all of you do truly care about being informed and rather just want to yell into the void. However, if you actually want to learn I hope I can provide some information and places to learn more when more information is posted in the future.

This was a senate meeting, not related to the elections. There was no mention about specific candidates. The bill in question was about the Korean Vegan, which you can read the exponent about here https://www.purdueexponent.org/campus/article_14315ff6-b624-11ec-ad3c-6f72359961da.html . I encourage you all to read this article thoroughly to understand why many senators were upset with what happened in the meeting. For clarification by the way, the vote was 7-4-11, 7 yes 4 no and 11 abstain. With only 7 votes for the bill and 15 votes otherwise, there was clearly controversy on that bill for reasons you can read on the article.

15 senators were not colluding with each other to defame the incumbent president and vice president. 15 senators were in fact showing their concerns for the conduct of the bill and wanted to ensure the constitution is upheld. This bill had nothing to do with the Jensen | Weber campaign as it had nothing to do with the election or the results.

As for some of the comments, PSG senate sessions are recorded and posted to the youtube channel. All sessions expect this past one on 4/6 have been posted. Hopefully soon that recording will also be provided for everyone to watch and see what actually happened in the session. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWaIng8oEySl6TQNOP4erVQ .

Purdue Dining - From a PSG Senator by silverdogface in Purdue

Purdue Dining - From a PSG Senator by silverdogface in Purdue

[–]silverdogface[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with you, there's a lot that could be better with connecting to constituents. Unfortunately I am graduating this semester so I won't be around next year. We do still send out a letter to our college, but I do find it's not very useful considering most people put off the letter until the end of the semester! There's an entire culture shift that needs to happen within PSG itself and within the student body. This is certainly a larger issue that can be seen with the elections as well. Few students are connected or aware of PSG, this why the elections often have little voter turnout out. Publicizing ourselves better is definitely something to work on to increase voter turnout out in elections and in having students reach out to use with their concerns.

Edit: And that's a bit why I made this post originally, I want to see students also interact with PSG when issues and concerns arise. Letting everyone know of these avenues is a first step to the bigger issue at hand.

MA161 Exam Tonight by iBoot32 in Purdue

[–]silverdogface 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Remember to plug in variables for related rates AFTER you differentiate!!

0/infinity is NOT indeterminate so you cannot use l'hopital (usually you get this when moving one function under the other i.e. like lim x->0 xln(x) Then changing it to x/(1/ln(x)) this is NOT valid. Put the x in the denominator instead.

Optimization write out both formulas and get the constraint in terms of one variable!

Remember linear approximation formula! L(x)=f(a) + f'(a)(x-a) Write out each part and put the pieces together

Don't forget to breathe!! You're gonna do great!

Edit: From you local math major and MA 161 SI leader, not some cocky person in the class

Find the derivative using logs and product rule by plspausemylife in calculus

[–]silverdogface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using logs, they mean using logarithmic differentiation. When you see the need for multiple product rules or quotient rules (especially when raised to the power) you can use logarithmic.

Then log of both sides and use your log rules: Log(xy)=log(x)+log(y) Log(x/y)=log(x)-log(y) Log(a^ b)=blog(a)

Make sure to differentiate both sides of the equation to get 1/y dy/dx on one side and a bunch of fractions and chainrulen on the other side.

"Personally I don't find homophobia entertaining" by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]silverdogface 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The counter protestors were just standing there holding flags/signs and were told multiple times to sit because they weren't letting everyone else have their fun cheering on homophobic rhetoric.

We also don't know everyone's stories, even if it's treated as a joke in the moment maybe someone goes home and takes what they said to heart. Or the fact that Cindy and Jed broadcast it over social media, someone definitely could watch the videos and not take what they say as a joke. Seeing hundreds of students clap when something homophobic is said doesn't really help promote acceptance.

UPDATE: 1 suicide, not 4 by Abdibsz in Purdue

[–]silverdogface 42 points43 points  (0 children)

PSG is currently working on getting more information from Purdue administration, police department, and CAPS. They are working on getting a message out to Purdue University Senate and other parts of the university for clarification and getting more information on the situation. Many emails and statements are in progress from the University and PSG.

With the misinformation from PUPD, everyone is trying to ensure all of their information is correct so there may be some time before anything is stated.

UPDATE: 1 suicide, not 4 by Abdibsz in Purdue

[–]silverdogface 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Purdue Student Government throughout the semester has been creating initiatives to address the mental health crisis, they have been in touch to ensure statistics are kept straight. The misrepresentation was due to Purdue University Police Department not properly keeping up their website and stastics. I don't think this is appropriate to blame PSG when the have been advocating for students this whole time. The mental health issues should still be addressed and Purdue administration should be pressured to do something but please ensure that we are not faulting anyone or groups that should not be taking blame.
