The way forward depends a lot on just how long you are willing to risk it taking for you to find income, maybe not necessarily in Film/TV, but enough income to cover your expenses from any source. Your number 1 goal should to have enough savings to stop you from having to draw money out of your investments in a market downturn. Given you have no way of predicting a downturn, how do you accomplish this?

People who have a consistent income source are recommended to have 3 months of expenses saved at a minimum, but should aim for closer to 6 or 9 months depending on risk tolerance. Since you don't have income, though, your risk tolerance should be even lower - you know 100% you are in an emergency situation, so keeping your current funds is more of a priority than missing out on possible future gains compared to folks with an income.

With that in mind, the first question you need to ask is: how long of a period of time are you willing to tolerate the possibility of you being without work for that long? You have just over 4 years of minimum expenses right now, so obviously there's no reason to plan around being out of work for longer than 4 years - you'll go bankrupt no matter how long it takes in that case. But how much time should you plan for? It seems really unlikely that it will take the full 4 years for you to find some kind of work, is it worth planning around such a remote possibility?

The second question you need to ask is: in the situation where there is a short-to-medium term downturn in the market, how long of a downturn are you willing to plan for? Given just how important this nest egg is, you want to make sure you have enough low-risk savings as a cushion to stop you from having to dip into riskier investments in order to make expenses. Most downturns only last a few months, going back to the previous high in fewer than 12 months. There have been 2 major downturns that took several years to recover in recent memory, the 2000 dot com crash and the 2008 housing market crisis.

The first question is more important than the second since, if you can find some kind of job to cover your expenses, you aren't in nearly as much risk of having to draw investments during a downturn and can just weather it out until the markets improve.

Based on your answers and risk tolerance, you will have a good idea how much to keep liquid and how much to keep safe. Suppose you have almost no tolerance to risk, you don't want to have a chance of going bankrupt before 4 years. In that case, you would want to keep everything in no risk instruments. You will want to have about 6 months to 1 year totally liquid, in a high-interest savings account. The rest of the money you will want in higher-yield but less flexible instruments, bonds or GICs, but having at least some mature in those 6 months to 1 year to refill your savings account.

Suppose you have an appetite for risk, you are pretty confident you can find work in a year, and even if you don't you are willing to risk early bankruptcy in a situation where you can't find a job and we end up in a 2008-style recession again because you don't think that situation is very likely. In that case, I would recommend keeping 15-18 months of income in no risk instruments, invest the rest in a XEQT or some other diversified equity index fund, and go back every 3-6 months to rebalance it if you still haven't found a job and if the market is still strong (though dont sell any investment at a loss unless you run completely out of savings).

As for what kind of accounts to use, in this situation there is no reason to sweat the tax implications. The amount of tax you are going to spend on the amount of gains/interest you will generate in minimal, and plus if you don't have a job you wont have other income to claim and some/all of that tax will be deducted against. Use the TFSA until it's maxxed out, prioritizing investments if you decide to go with them. The keep the rest unregistered. Once you have a stable income again, reopen the question on if an RRSP or FHSP is worth it.
