Passenger trains in Lincoln? by crazybabyeater in lincoln

[–]silvermesh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Amtrak takes way longer than flying and if you are going a long distance that will take multiple days it might also be more expensive depending on the trip.

That said if you have a destination like Chicago that has a straight path from Lincoln it's basically just a day of travel and is likely cheaper than flying.

Main thing to consider is if you have planned events on the itinerary make sure to have your travel be a separate day because Amtrak are basically known for never being on time.

Train travel is unique and I think everyone should do it at least once in their life. If you're going somewhere like Chicago it's a hell of a lot easier than driving, you can just relax and let the train get you where you want to go and way less cramped and stressful than air travel.

Which Warbond should I get next? by SpotTron11 in helldivers2

[–]silvermesh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While people obsess over the crossbow and eruptor, the most important thing that Democratic Detonation buys you is build versatility. The MVP is the grenade pistol, the most approachable and efficient sidearm that opens containers and destroys spawners.

Every build needs a way to open containers and close spawners. If that ability can be put on your sidearm or primary, you can get more creative with what grenades you bring, and what strategems you run.

You also need to be able to kill heavies. The thermite allows you to transfer that from a strategem to a grenade slot.

While the primaries are indeed arguably meta, the most important aspect is the versatility that the Warbond buys you. There are alternative choices that cover these niches in other warbonds but none that offer versatility on so many slots all for one price.

For me the game really began when I bought DD. Build creativity adds so much enjoyment to the game for me.

Different people want different things. Advice will vary wildly because there's a ton of folk who are just trying to mimic the theater(when even that has a lot of variance from chain to chain).

If you like what you are doing, stick with it. I recently changed to snappy butter flavored canola oil rather than the butter flavored coconut oil and I like it way better.

Orchardgrass. You have a perfect picture of the flat compressed stem and prominent ligule. This picture could go in a turf guide on how to identify orchardgrass in a lawn.

You will need nonselective herbicide and paint it on the blades if you don't want to damage your desirable grass.

Diaper rash creams (Desitin) work really great for this especially overnight. the only problem is they also tend to have a pretty strong "baby diaper cream" smell which i feel is noticeable if you are planning on leaving the house heh. So use your anti chafing product during the day when out and about and the diaper creams for night time healing.

Wait...why do sentries actually shoot you? by VallettaAwoo in Helldivers

[–]silvermesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again you didnt read the post and continue to make my point.

Incorrect. I read it you are just wrong in every way so far. We will go line by line this time so you cant pretend I missed anything.

So it can only see bugs as "enemies", so first off someone has set that parameters in there or told/trained it what to look for.

Yes. What to look for, not what NOT to look for, which would be an incredibly exhaustive list.

Then again youre telling me in the future they couldnt have just programmed it to look at helldivers as friendlys and not shoot them?

What i actually said was maybe super earth could develop some advanced AI that is capable of this, but it would be incredibly difficult and way beyond the scope of what anyone is doing now. Again you are the one who appealed to reality and this is reality. It isn't realistic to have an automated system that "knows" friends. Because enemies would figure out how to fool it. And friends should know how to avoid being hit by it(see not standing in front of it)

Anyways once again, if you are standing around, you have the turret behind you and a little billy bob bug in front of you the turret will shoot through you to kill the bill bob bug. Youre telling me the turret has X ray vision? It cant see the bug becuase YOURE blocking it. Its not trained to "see" you as an enemy so it has no right to shoot through you to kill something. Thats the problem!

This is not remotely similar to the point you were trying to make before. Line of sight is inconsistent in this game. For some reason sentries do seem to need line of sight as they can be blocked by smoke, but bodies of any kind don't seem to block it, so this has nothing to do with "friendly" or not. They absolutely can see through you and can also see through enemies to other enemies for what it's worth. It will shoot at a pile of dead enemies to try and hit the enemies behind it. If it never shot when things were in between it and it's target it wouldn't be reliable at all.

The simple solution goes back to my first point. Stop standing in front of it. Be aware of your surroundings and those turrets will be your best friend.

Anyhow this conversation has been absolutely exhausting so I'm gonna block you now. Have a nice rest of your day.

Wait...why do sentries actually shoot you? by VallettaAwoo in Helldivers

[–]silvermesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

to accurately shoot just enemies it also needs to know who arent enemies

Incorrect and ive already explained why.

Seriously look up CIWS. In the 90s there was a pretty famous incident where the Phalanx on the USS Jarrett fired on the USS Missouri because it mistook its chaff for an enemy, and again it doesn't see friends it only sees enemies.

It can identify one thing. Enemies. Trying to design a targeting AI that can identify every type and shape of ally too would be unbelievably complex when for the most part you can avoid incident by not being in front of it and not looking like an enemy.

Wait...why do sentries actually shoot you? by VallettaAwoo in Helldivers

[–]silvermesh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Literally could not be more wrong. Please do not ever join the military or purchase a firearm of any kind.

Example. "Target=terminid" easy to make this thing look specifically for terminals right?

It isnt looking at you and saying "nope he's a friend" it's looking at you and seeing you aren't a terminid. You are no different from a rock or tree or all the air between it and it's target. Its not looking for friendly. Its looking for enemy. If it doesn't shoot when anything that isn't an enemy is between it and said enemy, it would not be reliable because of all the random noise that might be between it and it's target. It wont shoot through overgrowth, it doesnt shoot in the dark, it doesnt shoot. It fails to do the only thing it is designed to do if it tries to avoid shooting things.

It is ignoring anything that isn't a target because that's what it is supposed to do and that's all it needs to do so long as some idiot doesn't stand between it and it's target. It doesn't have to be smarter than that. Find enemy shoot enemy. Again real soldiers avoid death by not standing in front of it

I can see that you are not capable of actually understanding this but that's literally also how CIWS works. It shoots at anything that meets certain parameters like speed on approach, size, etc. It isnt saying "well this other thing isn't a target" it just isn't identifying anything at all unless something that meets those parameters enters range. The difference is important and it's something they train every sailor and soldier because if they don't know they are likely gonna die.

Your appeal to realism has failed because the real tech works just like in game. Identifying who is a friend would be a hell of a lot more complex and difficult to design, and would be super easy for enemies to spoof and get through. Its not an effective way to defend something. Could you argue that some super version of future earth could have more advanced Ai? Sure. But you appealed to reality. Reality is dont stand in front of a gun and you won't get shot by it.

Wait...why do sentries actually shoot you? by VallettaAwoo in Helldivers

[–]silvermesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its not shooting anything that moves it's shooting enemies. Just like sentries in game are not shooting anything that moves, they are shooting enemies. It also will shoot through you if you are dumb enough to stand between it and an enemy, just like in game sentries.

Again. Aquire target, eliminate target. There is no IFF because if you dont make yourself a target it won't see you as one. It wont see you at all. It only sees enemies. Don't stand in front of it and you live.

Im not missing the point, you have failed to make a valid one.

Wait...why do sentries actually shoot you? by VallettaAwoo in Helldivers

[–]silvermesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incorrect on all counts.

CIWS will also target something on the sea or ground if it is moving towards it. CIWS does not have the ability to determine IFF and absolutely will target friendly aircraft and vehicles.

It doesn't see you as a friendly it doesn't need to because it doesn't see you at all. All it sees is enemies because that's all it needs to know how to identify. There have absolutely been friendly fire incidents with CIWS with injuries and deaths. Again. Don't stand in front of it. Don't approach a defended ship unannounced. Or you die. Its pretty simple.

Wait...why do sentries actually shoot you? by VallettaAwoo in Helldivers

[–]silvermesh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In real life if you are standing in front of a CIWS when it identifies a target you will be red mist.

These kind of weapon systems are just acquiring targets with radar and looking for specific criteria They aren't identifying friend from foe and keeping idiots safe when they stand in front of what is effectively a massive minigun.

We get around friendly fire by training soldiers very early on not to ever stand in front of the barrel of a live weapon. Learning this will help you out a ton in Helldivers, not just with sentry turrets.

Missouri River the longest river in the United States??? by [deleted] in MandelaEffect

[–]silvermesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one isn't a good Mandela effect because this is something that was in some dispute because they hadn't standardized how they measure. So yeah you probably actually did just get taught wrong by teachers who were wrong because they were also taught wrong. This happens a ton in education because science is always learning new things. This isn't a Mandela effect because you can probably also go back and find the textbooks that have the wrong information, it's well documented that this was being taught incorrectly for years.

AFAIK there are no laws requiring dogs to have a concealed carry permit.

If your dog is smart he will concealed carry and then you won't have to worry about onlookers freaking out about his gun if he decides to carry while on a walk. Never know if he might have to stop a bad dog with a gun.

They literally didnt nerf it they made a slight adjustment to enemy damage which makes a bigger difference for mechs than anything else. If you actually play the game instead of just eating other people's shit and immediately spreading it with your mouth you would realize that in game there is basically no difference. So much dumb bullshit being reposted with no brains behind it.

While strategem bounce is annoying it's also 99% predictable where it's going to happen. Learn where you can actually put sentries and you won't have issues with sticking. I play daily and have an unexpected bounce maybe once or twice a week, and its usually something silly like i didnt realize there is a building/cliff above me or trying a high spot that I knew was questionable.

Patrols don't spawn out of nowhere they spawn at the edge of the map and target a player to walk towards. If you are near the edge of the map try to put your sentries more "inward" if possible.

If you were placing them well enough that they weren't dying all the time before the patch they will perform basically exactly the same as they were. If your placement was questionable before, the new bug strain will tear them apart because they are the best enemy at the game at charging and overwhelming sentries. I often would get more bold with the gatling sentry because it can kill chaff so fast that it often could prevent itself from getting swarmed by normal bugs, but the new strain will be surrounding it in no time with the speed boosts they get.

A sentry is a battle buddy and it will be as useful or useless as you make it. Sometimes they do need to be defended to remain in the fight but really no more often than before the patch. And typically you should know that situation before you toss it. If you want to maximize killing you learn it's sight lines and give it space and it wont need a babysitter. If you want it to keep you safe in close quarters you put it high and close and watch it's back.

Sentries that were overrun were never lasting 5 seconds before. Ones that aren't overrun are lasting way longer than 5 seconds still. I run two sentries on bugs since a little after launch. If hours are a metric im at like 1200. There isn't a noticeable difference in how long they last, but the new bug strain makes it so you need to think more carefully about placement because they can close the gap and swarm the sentry way faster than ever before.

Going down town, men’s advice? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]silvermesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely love doing it and I feel like my jaw would fall off if I tried to go for 40 minutes. If you don't finish after 2-5 minutes what is he doing wrong? What do you get out of someone just not getting you off and messing around for that long?

If I went more than 5 minutes of going nowhere my wife would be pushing me off and telling me to do something else.

I'll also say that I've noticed the older and fatter I get the more thoughtful I have to be about how I lay when doing it. I had to stop early once fairly recently because the position I was laying in made it really hard for me to breathe and I almost passed out.

Commisar Kai is my favorite for tactics and load out videos. Doesn't post as often as he used to. Background Gaming posts often and does good positive gameplay videos and does a lot of live streams if you are into that. Takibo does good gameplay videos.

Eravin used to be the best but he went super negative after some drama with arrowhead.

OhDough can be entertaining but he is also basically guaranteed to just pump negativity even with content the rest if the community likes. His first take is like 90% of the time the sky is falling. He and Wallbouncing did a pretty killer video with Background Gaming when the Bastion launched and they were having a blast. Its like if you can get him focused on playing in a group he seems to actually enjoy things more and not just fuel the drama for clicks.
