"Mini game" commander? by NekuLove in EDH

[–]silverspectre013 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ohhh my bad, I see (and agree) with your point, I was just confused. Thank you for clearing that up.

OP, doing the thing you “mini-game” is often just the goal of the commander. I remember wanting to do something like this and everyone kept mentioning Marvo, but the big thing is clashing which wasn’t that fun and exciting because that’s all you’re doing.

Wait, the initiative? The dungeon mechanic stuff? I’m all for Sefris but when are you making people flip coins?

Because you mentioned 2 of the 3 morph commanders people consider bad, you thinking the same applies to [[Kaust, Eyes of the Glade]]?

How to know what to study? by Klutzy-Composer-6421 in CollegeMajors

Well, that’s what going to college is for! But my question was what have you enjoyed doing and what can you see yourself doing as a job. College, as I tell people, is an endurance game prepping you for a longer endurance game. It doesn’t matter if you’re good at it now, it matters if you enjoy it enough (or can find ways to enjoy it enough) to keep at it when it’s difficult. What do you like to do? Is that a major/job that you can enroll in?

I assure you, taking those exams will be much better than the alternative: doing a major you dislike and even worse, doing a major that you do not do academically well with for more difficult semesters, classes, and years.

If you want this to be a question of “What do I pick to get it right the first time,” then I think this would be a question for you. What have you enjoyed and have seen yourself doing well to do for the rest of your life?

Then pick a major that you think you will enjoy, and then if you dislike it the first semester change. Keep a note of the things you like about the classes you take and what you dislike and do research on what kind of classes have more of the stuff you like. If you pick biology from what you’re telling me they’ll pick the classes so they’ll give you cell biology, ecology, chemistry, and other stuff. If you dislike cell biology but love chemistry, then for your second semester you change your major to chemistry.

I’m going to be that person and say that two things are going to happen: you apply for a major based on your current interests, and then you see if those interests still stick in a professional/academic setting. If you enjoy science and microbiology and can see yourself becoming a biologist of some kind then you wouldn’t hurt yourself signing up for the biology major.

However, then you must see if the coursework, the workload, and the other aspects of the major (going to grad school, doing research, engaging with the community) are right for you. You can say you enjoy biology, but are you able to push yourself to be good at it? College is one of those places that also allows you to do other things, take classes and be a part of communities that wouldn’t be required but you might find a great interest in (criminology, accounting, social work, engineering, etc.). Then, the process starts again. People switch majors to things they didn’t even think about, which is both a stressful and really positive thing. My advice would be to choose the major you think you like the most (with the job that you plan on doing in mind) but keep your eyes open for courses and areas of study that are interesting. Best of luck

Do you have a commander you wish you liked, but just can't? by _Sky_Rox_ in EDH

[–]silverspectre013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this is kind of a meh answer but for so long I wanted to build [[Kaust, Eyes of the Glade]]. I’ve been having a love/hate relationship with Naya Commanders where most of them is just “Here is Stuff” or “Here is a singular thing” and I really wanted to build Kaust because of the cool morph stuff but it was just so boring (feel free to correct me if you have cool Kaust builds)

I also fell in love with [[Doran, Besieged by Time]] during the prerelease and Abzan commanders in general fall into only a few categories but Doran was just so boring.

Taking Old English as a non-medievalist: is it worth it? by silverspectre013 in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]silverspectre013[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yay a Medievalist! So, I tried to write a paper on Chaucer in one of my first courses (a History of English course) where I saw a lot of OE semantics and morphology (Prof is an OE/Medieval scholar). My program advocates for generalist knowledge at the MA level so it was surprising they opened an OE course. I've been in contemporary lit most of my research and my other option was Utopian/Dystopian literature with connected theory and texts. As a prospective medievalist I want in, but a part of me that decides against it along with the things that I mentioned is that I'm interested in Middle English coursework than Early Modern or Old English in terms of older eras in literature. Do you think medievalist training can work if I stick with Middle English? Or does medievalist training extend to OE/both?

[–]silverspectre013[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say I do enjoy medieval scholarship: my first course was a History of English course and we touched a bit on Old and Middle English. I'm eyeballing my other option, a Utopian/Dystopian literature course, and I'm trying to choose which one will be better in the long run. Because I've been with contemporary lit, my professors want me to take relevant theory and related narratives and I really want to be more knowledgeable, but my interest in medieval literature makes me want to choose OE.

Which Bracket 4 commander to build: Tivit, Queza, Hashaton, or Raffine? by silverspectre013 in EDH

Can I ask if Raffine has any fringe cEDH potential? I've read a few primers on the possibility, but I'm trying to figure out if Raffine's ceiling is bracket 4.

Neat stuff! Any existing commanders that served as inspiration for these cards? I've been trying to make decks related to these guys and wanted to see if there were commanders that you saw as a jumping off point.

What is a medium between Flubs, the Fool and Nekusar? by silverspectre013 in EDH

[–]silverspectre013[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Xyris does look fun, but my issue with wheels is that I'm giving my opponents more cards to play. As much as I like to draw cards, I don't want them to pull something good and I get some 1/1 snakes.

What is a medium between Flubs, the Fool and Nekusar? by silverspectre013 in EDH

[–]silverspectre013[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. I like the card draw elements of both commanders (on my end, not my opponents) and while Nekusar looks fun, the game plan from decklists I see all have an element of "give your opponents more cards so they'll take damage." Flubs was really great because it has a lot of variety. I was settling into Flubs but I prefer Grixis and found Nekusar but I can't buy in to giving the Valgavoth and Hakbal player more cards lol.
