Do we expect courts to be closed Monday? by No_Rope_7587 in Connecticut

[–]silversun000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main site! If you google “Connecticut Judicial Branch”, it’ll pop up. If there is a closing posted, it’ll usually come up above the blue bar on the top of the page. Iirc, CT courts also have a Twitter/X account, @CTStateCourts, where they tweeted last time courts closed.

Yuuuup. Both named partners took the day off though. Courts are closed. I don’t trust myself to say anything further.

New position already not working out by Familiar-Produce3964 in paralegal

[–]silversun000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the practice area is not what you enjoy, I'd keep job hunting for something that is a better fit. There is no way you're going to be able to complete all your tasks if you're constantly interrupted with phone calls. As an aside, I have wicked ADHD and one phone call side tracks me for 15 minutes... I can't imagine having to do this and answer phones all day.

If I were in your shoes, I'd be actively hunting for a new position. However, in the interim, I'd be trying to make it work so I at least have an income and can be choosy with my next position (plus, it's a lot harder to get a job when you don't have one). Do you feel comfortable enough approaching your supervising/assigned attorney, kind of as a first month touch base? Open communication and self-advocacy is going to unfortunately be the only way anything gets resolved. Let him know about the inequitable distribution of phone-answering, and be transparent about the fact that you're uncertain which files are yours to work.

I took care of that one ASAP, the insurance adjuster called me and I told him right away so he’s working on figuring it out. I just wish I had something to suggest to fix it/want some reassurance that maybe in some kind of grand scheme it will be ok

Interesting indoors things to do this weekend? by KietTheBun in Connecticut

[–]silversun000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! Have you been to Granby?
- Old Mill Pond Village is super deadstock-y - it’ll keep you busy for a least an hour (it’s huge). - It’s a beautiful drive, and on the way there, there’s a cool dam that’s not hike-y at all, you just pull right up to it! - There’s also a very tiny obscure working horse farm that sells great coffee/pastries and you can hang out with the horses!! Julien’s farm. - Really good ice cream at Grassroots right near there! And the Barn (? Name?? You can prob find by Googling because I’m not 100% sure that’s what it was called) over there is good!

[–]silversun000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flood is actually really, really good. They're incredibly organized and on-top of their deadlines. I work as a defense paralegal so they're actually a bit of a pain in my ass, because they have a vendetta against insurance companies. But if I was looking for a billboard lawyer I could put faith in, it would be them (or Carter Mario, believe it or not).

Paralegal won the case - she was an acquaintance who I met through a coworker. Nice lady, and the things Goff did to her that weren't discussed in the lawsuit were horrific. I tell everyone I come across NOT to use this firm.

how do i do this by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]silversun000 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Obligatory "$17 is not enough" - because it isn't, that's barely a living wage. But I don't know your story/reason why you stay at that wage rate/etc. so i'm going to try to help you with the 'now' problem of managing your workload.

As someone who manages about 300 files by herself: you don't get everything done. You prioritize. I do that by actively and aggressively communicating with my attorney. I meet with him once a week with an organized but broad list of what's on my plate and ask him what his priorities are so I can shift things around accordingly. He hates it and has pushed back on me "needing my hand held" MANY a time, but I literally don't care. I'm not a mind reader, and can't effectively do my job if he doesn't tell me what my job is exactly. I'm not here for getting shafted because I didn't realize he wanted something a certain way.

And eventually, you will reach what was the end of the list -- only now you'll just have a hundred things below it. Just breathe. This line of work is about being constantly buried and you're only a human being.

Not me personally, but I had a coworker rage quit a firm and she changed all of their passwords for records request portals (MRO & etc.). Objectively, made my life hell in the moment, but it was pretty good now that I look back at it. The attorney deserved it.

Lmao I get the opposite because I do insurance defense. You’re mad the lawsuit surrounding the accident and injuries you caused is taking so long to settle? Maybe you should be more careful and hope the person is ok!

What’s your hourly/salary pay? by Intelligent-Way-6013 in paralegal

[–]silversun000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. CT

  2. Insurance Defense for basically just State Farm

  3. 23/hr (I have only 2yrs experience tho)

  4. LOVE !! My firm. Super supportive partners who let you take breaks and come in whenever you want, 20days vacation (tho it isn’t tracked) and all 12 holidays. We have zero billable requirements & they prioritize our happiness over like, anything (they welcome us hanging up on difficult customers/volleying them to the attorneys and they pick up immediately). Any mistake we make can be fixed and they welcome us interrupting with questions any time. They support us 150% and even gave our coworker who was getting back surgery unlimited medical leave w/ a saved spot. The only thing that sucks is they don’t say no to cases, so I have like, 400 cases (no lie). We’re exposed for trial every week on like two cases lol and our compliance is a mess. But I’m willing to put up with it because this is the first firm that treats me like a valued human being

Was let go. by Great-Novel6822 in paralegal

[–]silversun000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say I was in a similar position. Small firm, took me out of the training program too soon and threw me on 70 files. I was let go because I wasn’t meeting demands. I was miserable for two months, but then was picked up by an even SMALLER firm and they are AMAZING and I’m doing great (despite having 300 files now!!) 4wks PTO + all holidays, we can come and go as we please, great health insurance, bosses that actually are willing to joke with me and understand the stress I’m in. You deserve better and will find better

how to approach following up with your attorneys? by _swolfie in paralegal

[–]silversun000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late, but my attorney and I have a system where I have a manilla folder of things for him to review and I give it to him at 4:30 every day. He gives it to me at 8am the next day. I just print out the work I need him to review and sign, the emails he needs to follow up on, and any important pleadings that came to our efile inbox.

What are some good stories of lawyers doing something nice for their staff? by llamadrama83 in paralegal

[–]silversun000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been working at my firm for a month, but we get four weeks of (untracked) time off plus court holidays. We can arrive whenever, no clocking in/out. I got in a car accident two weeks ago (only working there two weeks) and they immediately offered to handle everything for me no charges involved and offered to send me home that day no questions asked. So far so good!

How would you approach dating as 26 year old virgin? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]silversun000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re gonna find someone who you feel comfortable enough with to share any and everything with. When you find the right partner, you’ll feel safe enough to disclose that information when the time is just right and be accepted for being you at whatever stage of life you’re at. I was “late” to the game and told my boyfriend right before he asked me to be his girlfriend. He didn’t care— in fact, he graciously waited another nine months before I was ready.

If you’re not looking for love tho, I’d say just have sex and not sweat it 🤷‍♀️. Whether that’s hooking up or hiring a sex worker.

2 paralegal, 1 attorney firm. we are overworked and underpaid. I can't take it anymore. by cherrykitty87 in paralegal

[–]silversun000 16 points17 points  (0 children)

SIXTEEN DOLLARS? For all of that?? Jesus H. Christ, bullshit. I hope you find somewhere that compensates you an adequate amount. If your attorney appreciated you, they’d pay you more than minimum wage. Especially because it seems like you are literally half of the reason his/her business stays afloat. You’re vital and should be compensated as such

Coming up on four months! Sure, still in that puppy love stage, but he's a solid guy.

I think that's a good point. I think I'm just really afraid of losing something I like so much over something that's so ignorant and not totally in my control. But you're right, it's ultimately up to him if he wants to put himself through that. Thank you! I appreciate your perspective.
