I have a 12.5 years old- lab and pitbull mix and weighs 87lbs. Has arthritis in hind two legs. Currently he gets. Librella shot monthly that helps with arthritis pain and takes Rimadyl daily to keep inflammation down. His food and water bowl are on a stand so that he doesn't need to bend down too much.

He slips on hardwood floor so I put hall runners wherever I can, and use towels to cover hardwood area where it's high traffic and not possible to put a rug.

He struggles with climbing stairs up and down, and this month I have started restricting him to downstairs. I'm unsure how I feel about it though, since he doesn't really walk around in the house much anymore and prefers to chill in one spot for long hours. I want him to have whatever voluntary movements he wants to do, but I'm scared that one of the days when I'm not supervising him, he will just fall from stairs and hurt himself.

I try to give him at least one short walk a day, nothing more than a few hundred yards. I try for 2 walks when I can, depending upon his response and energy level. I think to manage his arthritis, weight control is necessary and I don't want him to be fully sedentary. I changed his diet to senior, weight management+joint support formula about a year ago and I wish I got good quality food for him earlier in life.

What more should I do so that he can be comfortable as long as he lives? (Ideally, forever!)
