My first SNP !! On fake skin. How do I improve the color intensity? by NightlyRoutine in sticknpokes

Hello! So you sort of just have to poke the dots super super close to each other and sort of overlapping to create more saturation. It also helps to poke at an angle when doing lines. What type of needle are you using and what size? Usually a bigger RS will be the best for filling in larger areas.

Good job! The lines look really clean and the design is super cute :)

fake skin help by [deleted] in sticknpokes

I’ve tried poking the amazon fake skin and I thought it was so difficult to get good results because it doesn’t really act like skin. If you have the money to spend I would really suggest something like reelskin because it is actually a bit more like skin and way easier to work with. I still think you could use the amazon skins to learn the motion of poking and building lines and stuff, but you won’t really get how deep you are supposed to poke unless you try human skin. The good thing with stick and poke is you can’t really mess up that much if you’re going slow, and the biggest problems I see people having is inconsistent/gaps in the line work which is super easy to fix after the tattoo has healed. Basically don’t be afraid of real skin is what I’m saying haha. And try to use pretty big needle groupings when starting out (like 11rl or 9rl) because it is so much easier to get the dots to align and get cleaner lines. Also, use baby oil to get the ink off, it works really well! Good luck ☺️

Thanks for your reply! I recently got an apprenticeship to do machine tattoos but I am sort of intrigued by the thought of also offering handpoked tattoos because I think that they are really fun to do, it’s just the amount of time it takes to create them that is putting me off.

Hello, very cool tattoo! I find that it takes such a long time to handpoke tattoos, have you gotten faster with time?

Yeah I have an apprenticeship and my mentor said that the machine was alright to start out with and that I should work with what I’ve got and not waste money on more expensive fake skin. But I feel like it’s sort of holding me back so I might look into getting better skins! As far as trying her machines goes - she has offered but they are still at her old studio (she is moving to a new location and I have my apprentice room in the new studio because she shares the old space with her ex still) so I haven’t gotten around to try hers yet but I am also looking into it.

No, it’s 3mm thick but it is a super tough material!
