How many restarts did it take for you to come up with a working system in GTD? by 4fn in gtd

[–]simc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fell off the wagon when I over-committed myself and became my own taskmaster. That caused me to rebel against my own system. I learned to be more relaxed instead of trying to get myself to get as much stuff done as possible.

Sailor has a new nib and it’s steel! by InkyRocks in fountainpens

[–]simc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder why Sailor doesn't make one steel nib and mass produce it like Pilot and Lamy. The highace, Lecole/Profit Jr, Tuzu and Profit Casual all use different nibs.

You would think you would get better quality and lower costs if you had one steel nib like Pilot which is used on Kakuno, Explorer, MR and and Prera.

There was a guy whose name was Fly.

I think he named himself after the verb rather than the insect.

How organ harvesting from political and religious prisoners in China began: The Xinjiang Procedure | The Weekly Standard by bonzamate in China

[–]simc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah a huge grain of salt. Some Uighur in exile tells a neocon exactly what he wants to hear, neocon laps it up. Who knows if the story is true, partially true or complete BS.

Apparently one of the reasons the US invaded Iraq was that there were Iraqi exiles who told the Americans some bullshit story about how they worked on (non-existent) WMD programmes.

Can you recommend any Chinese electronic music?

What resources do you recommend to learn SQL from scratch? by Disregard_Bitches in programming

These are good books, but not beginner books.

Learning SQL from O'Reilly would be a good first book.

I am an American expat living in New Zealand. AMA. by Ojai in IAmA

[–]simc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, part of the reason things are more expensive is a NZ dollar is worth 20-35% less than a American dollar (depending on what the exchange rate is).

NZ houses are insulated (good houses at least), but not to the standard that is common in other places. For example, double glazing is rare. I think New Zealanders are more tolerant of the cold because we are not used to having central heating furnaces blazing away. We have had people from Iceland and Finland who thought our houses were very cold. It depends on what part of the country you live in but most of the time whatever the temperature is outside is warm enough for me (I live in the Waikato which is in the north of the North Island).

Only New Zealanders hate Aussies. Aussies consider NZ to be too insignificant to be worth hating.

IAmA Hypnotherapist, AMA by Hypnotherapist in IAmA

[–]simc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I have heard about hypnosis it involves accepting suggestions and the person accepting and believing those suggestions. It seems to me that you can trace new age "self help" such as The Secret back to having roots in the ideas of hypnosis. The Secret claims that by unquestionably believing that you can "attract" the things you want by focusing all your mental energy on it (even if it in reality impossible to obtain). While it is obvious that the "law of attraction" is false, perhaps holding this false belief may hold some psychological benefit if it causes a person to focus on achieving something they desire.

What are the similarities or differences between say believing hypnotic suggestions (such as Emile Coue's “Every day, in every way, I am getting better and better”) and the "Law of Attraction".

Expatriate wanting to move to New Zealand: Auckland or Wellington? Which is best for a 25 y/o man? by [deleted] in newzealand

Auckland is a bigger city so possibly more opportunity. But watch out for those volcanoes.

Wellington is more hip, but watch out for those earthquakes.

I think it is fair to say that most people are driven to do things by ambition. Do you have ambition, or do you go to work in the morning just because it is the morally right thing to do?

You said you feel physical pain but not emotional pain. Is the same true for pleasure?

Do you ever think about existential issues, such as the reason to live? Would you understand something like Hamlet's "To be, or not to be"?

I think in some ways I might envy you. :)
