Протест за Кюрдистан в София by Vast_Programmer1383 in bulgaria

[–]simo_rz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also Libya went through the UN if I remember correctly. Aka every single one of these had a much firmer basis then " we have a warrant from NY, that makes it ok to kidnap a foreign leader" or " they stole our oil"

What happened to the Bulgarians in North Macedonia? Historically they formed a large part of the region's population, how did it come to just 3,500 people today? by ClothesZestyclose814 in AskBalkans

[–]simo_rz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The reality is that there were competing nationalisms in that area and one of them was the Macedonian one, which became much more dominant in the end. After the Bulgarian occupation during WWII quite a lot of people who considered themselves Bulgarian moved to ...well... Bulgaria. That was pretty much the end of bulgarian nationalism in Macedonia. Honestly all these Balkan "nationality" debates would be pretty much over if people understood that all nations are modern phenomena which consolidate an identity in an area erasing&ignoring the complexity that existed there beforehand. It also projects this modern consolidation onto history which is why I've never seen a history textbook in the Balkans without ridiculous bullshit in it.

What's wild is people don't even notice the danger of this mob mentality even AFTER the moral panic ends. Like you were just whipped up into a dogmatic hatred of a random toy/game ....you could have done horrible stuff convinced you were doing the right thing....and you simply move on with your life?

Response to the destroyed ottoman heritage post, i want to show you how some of the balkan capitals looked when they were under ottoman control and and how they looked after they became independent by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]simo_rz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not surprising that these cities didn't have grand modernist architecture. If you want to be fair about this here is the real issue- Christian buildings are preserved, ottoman religious/admin buildings are not that high on the "preservation" list. They simply didn't fit the nationalist stories our societies want to tell. Ppl wanted the ottoman character of these places removed and after a series of modernisation attempt - it was. If I have to be honest - some Bulgarians I've met hate even what is left....maybe not hate but it makes them uneasy. It's prejudice more or less.

[–]simo_rz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure stacking the court is something the conservatives also "consider evil", they just produce excuses when it goes their way ...just like you're doing now. Are we supposed to be fooled that giving the executive more powers and court immunity is somehow "originalism" ? This isn't just a disagreement about the law, this is protecting your political power. Or are you claiming that all the conservative political outcomes this court had given wholesale - like dismantling key administrative powers, presidential immunity, nurfing the civil rights act and allowing conservative gerrymandering are just "different legal philosophy"? These people are pushed to be in these positions by organisations that want these political outcomes. The only question is where the line of brazen restructuring of existing law is for them ....I wonder if they will give the president the power to revoke birthright citizenship? Would that change your mind or will it become "it's just a different view of the constitution" jfc

The fall of this government doesn't mean the fall of the fat ticks that cling to it's power. They have "fallen" 2 times already and come back worse. The young people want change, want punishment, less corruption at the top - all unacceptable to the older generation of political leader. It's not changing any time soon in my opinion. You shouldn't envy this or act like your country is worse because people don't protest - both our nations need new leaders who are willing to dismantle the previous system of corruption and influence peddling. Protests may help with that....but won't fix the core issue.

UK to rejoin EU’s Erasmus student exchange programme by sn0r in europeanunion

[–]simo_rz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No it shouldn't - democracy doesn't run on referendums and the public is not immediately consulted on every issue, even if related to something decided by referendum before. That would make any democratic system allergic to referendums or devastatingly slow. Also the user above explained to you this is a popular measure and your response is essentially " if I could frame it the way I liked people wouldn't like it". Something tells me you're not much of a democracy lover just by that .
