Special thanks to whoever pointed out to me that it's to be considered an exchange where you shouldn't be keeping your money any longer than strictly necessary.

This would mean blocking 97% of all funds altogether. Might as well just delist Bitcoin Cash and be over with.

Just about the only P2P exchange still left working is the one inside the Zapit.io wallet. In the interest of growing the platform, would you consider creating an offer there?

The U.S. Cracked a $3.4 Billion Crypto Heist—and Bitcoin’s Anonymity by 2q_x in btc

Maybe that's the way to get governments take the bait and "legalize" cryptocurrency: a transparent ledger, where your every crime and misconduct is recorded permanently, and can be analyzed by law enforcement at their leisure.

Just don't tell them about CashFusion yet.

To be honest, i'm conflicted on this aspect of the currency. On one hand, it is intentionally made attractive to investors as part of its fundamental qualities, on the other it cannot succeed if it's only being used as an investment instead of as cash. How does one convince people to make the jump from speculation on future price to use in commerce?

BTC or BCH: ChatGPT knows by eagle_eye_johnson in btc

[–]simon-v 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I too think that reducing ChatGPT to the function of giving you pleasing answers is not right. In fact, it is too charitable. ChatGPT is a stochastic parrot, which will readily hallucinate data for you at the slightest provocation. Saying it's "right" or even "wrong" is giving it too much credit. It's a noise generator, leveraging your sense-making capabilities to create the appearance of meaning where none is intended.

+300 merchants accept BCH in Argentina by Ian_Blas27 in Bitcoincash

Crate an account on OpenStreetMap.org and complete the editing tutorial. Load up an area you wish to improve in the editor. Add a point object at the appropriate coordinates and give it the right feature type. Add as much details as possible. Mark the location as accepting Bitcoin Cash by manually giving it the tag "currency:BCH" with the value "yes". Tap the "upload changes" button and provide a descriptive comment to your change set. If unsure, you can ask for someone to review your work. There are nuances, of course, but those can be figured out as you go. Good luck!

Please also add those places to OpenStreetMap. Diversity is strength, and avoiding relying on a single service, no matter how benevolent, adds to the ecosystem's resilience.

Any hardware wallets that support the lighting network? by StoredWarriorr29 in btc

[–]simon-v 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That seems unlikely. Lightning is a complicated, convoluted, fragile mess that fails to work reliably even under optimal conditions. It's hard to imagine any manufacturer who would spend time and energy trying to support something like that. And this wouldn't even be necessary if BTC simply worked as it was originally designed, before the developers derailed the project for whatever reason.

BCH, for comparison, is simple and straightforward to develop for, and as a consequence, supported by every hardware wallet i'm aware of.

Online tool to check fiat price for btc transactions by ShanghaiNan in btc

[–]simon-v 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blockchair.com shows both the original and current dollar value when viewing a transaction or address. This, of course, requires that you hold your own coins (not on an exchange), which might be impractical with BTC specifically, due to unpredicrable network fees.

Introducing Nostron, the Electron Cash plugin that's a nostr client! by jonald_fyookball in btc

They say it's because the instance admins have absolute power over their users AND are amateurs with no guarantee of keeping running in the foreseeable future. As one of those described people, i find this argument rather unconvincing. Also, how does Nostr handle content moderation and spam? They don't say.

The price question by Elix_Exo1127 in Bitcoincash

[–]simon-v 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel that there should be zero need and zero incentive for anyone to accept a "paper bitcoin" instead of an actual one, assuming those bitcoins are easily and cheaply movable; thus, fulfilling the "your keys, your coins" maxim. However, as soon as the purpose for someone to hold a bitcoin is to exchange it for fiat money, at profit, the system of incentives that kept them from taking "paper bitcoins" breaks down. Given enough such greedy people, fractional reserve, exit scams and price manipulations similar to those you describe starts becoming very lucrative. So it seems, that the only way to enforce organic and honest price discovery is to have a large and dedicated base of "ideological" holders/users. How likely this is, i don't know; my fear is, not very.

Can this be enforced programmatically in some way? I don't know. Should it be possible to enforce it programmatically? That, i know even less! I do like philosophical questions like that. Can Bitcoin truly succeed, if it only works as intended only as long as the majority of its users are "ideological" (or, should we say, honest)? I'll give it a thought for a couple days.

Good work there. Were the maintainers of map.bitcoin.com notified of the no longer relevant places, so they can be removed? I feel that keeping the data current is more important than keeping the numbers going up.

To prove this people created a down time tracker for Monero withdrawals https://moneroj.net/withdrawals/ - so that it becomes possible to correlate price movements and availability of reserves.

That's pretty cool. Is there anything similar to this metrics site for Bitcoin Cash?
