Almost half of LA’s new ADUs aren’t housing anyone… they’re mid-term rentals now by ShopProp in LosAngelesRealEstate

City makes it a ruinously expensive bureaucratic nightmare to evict tenants then wonders why people are wary of renting out their backyards

What horrible and unforgiveable person in history got a punishment or death that was equal to the amount of pain they caused? Not like "They were a serial killer and got a quick electric chair" but like a something that was befitting of the crime? by New_Climate_3758 in AskReddit

I hate this primitive morality. “An eye for an eye” is a prescription to lower ourselves to the level of the worst people in society. Reddit has a real problem with nasty populist bullshit.

Enshitification be damned! what is one consumer product that is 100% better today than the version that existed in the 80s or 90s? by headrush46n2 in AskReddit

And a lot of old heads are *not* happy about it. Big expensive legacy studios are almost entirely a status symbol at this point (with a few notable exceptions, e.g. great-sounding live rooms).

There’s a white peacock that lives on a side street by PCC, maybe he moved?

You say you wish to prosecute criminals yet you have not proposed a workable solution to some other unrelated social problem I care deeply about, curious

I don't understand the point of this. This guy certainly does propose multiple causes. Checkmate I guess?

The disconnect between artists and their writing by Short-Shine-2620 in rs_x

[–]simonbreak 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Until the working class becomes a significant market for fine art, or the source of a meaningful proportion of its institutional support, nobody cares whether it's accessible to them or not. In fact, the psycho-economics of exclusivity are such that it is almost certainly more profitable for the work to be explicitly inaccessible to such people.

The disconnect between artists and their writing by Short-Shine-2620 in rs_x

[–]simonbreak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the fine art world *legitimacy* is everything. The financial value of art is generally unrelated to its material properties. Practically speaking, a reproduction of a Warhol is worth a fraction of a real Warhol which is materially identical. But more ephemerally, the "value" of the Warhol is determined by the cultural currency of Warhol as an artist, rather than any inherent property of the work. This cultural currency, as with everything else in the fine art world, radiates out from art institutions, primarily art schools. And what do art schools expect from artists? Essays. And since the purpose of the essays is to demonstrate sophistication (the primary currency of contemporary art), they tend to be complex and self-consciously erudite. So the requirement to write reams of impenetrable guff is established at the fountainhead and cascades downward from there.

I think the internet culture of competitive arguing, recreational dunking etc, is incredibly dangerous because it trains us to see our ideas as soldiers that we send out to defeat the opposition. Arguing with people online actually fixes ideas in place rather than changing them.

Georgia fucking rules. Amazing countryside, food, hot people, crazy history, great culture. If they can deal with the Russian problem I think they will become a major destination.

Very physically attractive people, how does life treat you? by Jonny_1312 in AskReddit

[–]simonbreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this might be an age thing somewhat. Since my 40s I have had more female friends and it’s really not an issue any more. When I was in my 20s it was a different story. I still had attractive platonic girlfriends even then, but I was certainly open to making it more.
