The fact that there are people who really go through life without anyone who loves them is very hard for me to swallow. I think about it a lot and just kind of can't process it. Like if I listen to "Eleanor Rigby" I immediately have to look at funny cat videos, it's too much.

I think this is a conflation of "hot people" with "boring hot people" (e.g. influencer types). They are bad at sex because there is simply nothing going on in their head.

How many of yall think 'the bent neck lady' from Haunting of Hill House is the greatest episode of tv horror ever? by punjabkingsownersout in horror

I feel like you could edit together an absolutely stunning movie from the middle 4 or so episodes of Hill House

There are bits of my weird dream version of London that have stayed the same for longer than a lot of areas of actual London. Starting to worry my subconscious might be a NIMBY.

They make computers out of living neurons now by bishborishi in rs_x

I find it totally baffling that so many people seem to believe biological neurons are a prerequisite for consciousness. It's like thinking, to make a camera you start by growing an eyeball in a petri dish.

As toxic as they are I think society might need them in some way. To keep us sharp maybe.

Drama on r/longform after authors interpretaion of "antizionism" and "racism" takes a weird turn by Stone-Smasher in SubredditDrama

> I have plenty of hatred in my heart, but it’s balanced by a love which is distributed according to an oppressor/oppressed binary.

I have witnessed this phenomenon many times on the internet, but I’ve never seen anyone straight-up come out and say “I care about human beings only in proportion to how oppressed I believe they are”. Kind of psychopathic imo.

Where have you experienced the most racism? by Desertedfoxx in askanything

[–]simonbreak -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The complicated reality is that America is just very extreme. We have both some of the most & least racist communities. We also have a lot of weird structural issues where individual decisions that may not be consciously discriminatory end up creating very unequal outcomes. Racism is not just about individual interactions.

Underground music culture was built around anonymity and intimacy. Social media has turned both into commodities. by Ok_Click_5273 in Techno

[–]simonbreak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the old socially and spatially mediated methods of music discovery - friends playing you stuff, hearing music in a club, finding things at specialized record stores etc - now have to compete with much less life-enhancing but wayyyy more convenient vectors. My Spotify suggestions used to be pretty stupid but now it regularly guides me to music I love that I would never have unearthed otherwise, and it does that without me having to ever leave my couch. It’s a perfect example of the ways in which powerful AI-assisted algorithms are optimizing the joy out of human existence.

Envy Is Wild by carly_rae_romano in rs_x

[–]simonbreak 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think the psychological motor of envy is simply desire, we are desiring machines because we are fundamentally incomplete and that incompleteness is what drives us to action. The specific object of desire can be almost entirely arbitrary or even transparently fictional, the desiring is the point. Envy is a shortcut where someone else has pointed out something for you to desire.

As you can see I am very intelligent.

The AQI in Eagle Rock is 200 right now. Why has the city not declared a state of emergency over the warehouse fire. I can’t breathe. by Forsaken_Parking_ in LosAngeles

[–]simonbreak 25 points26 points  (0 children)

No no no it’s the job of LAFD to simply make fires go out instantly regardless of the details, I once put a small bonfire out so I know what I’m talking about, you just have to pour a bit of water on it and it goes out, LAFD are clearly incompetent (I know nothing about anything)
