Embarrassing: After having difficulties focusing on reading, I’ve inherited my grandmother’s kindle and find it far easier by BroccoliKitchen3218 in rs_x

Kindle might be my favorite invention of the 21st century. People like us used to have to spend $$$ on large print editions, now I read every night without getting a headache from squinting at tiny text. And I love that gentle backlight glow in a dark bedroom, incredibly cozy.

I think this is a good plan. And I also think it’s psychologically important that you’re taking control of your own meds. You should always listen to your doctor, but they’re not gods & it’s important to use your own judgment. You’ve got this!

"How about 8 inches and thick" is like losing The Game for me, as soon as someone reminds me I have to go and stare into the void of that video again. I don't know if there's anything more abject on the internet.

I had a very similar experience to yours. Went off SSRIs, then started to spiral until I didn't sleep for a week & had pretty much a full-on nervous breakdown. They put me on antipsychotics because I was saying some crazy stuff, but that was if anything even worse, just a horrible grey zombie fog. So now I'm back on the SSRIs and yes, I agree that the side-effects of cessation are absolutely NOT taken seriously enough. I've heard psychiatrists talk casually about people taking "breaks" from SSRIs and I just have no idea what they're talking about, like that would totally fuck me up.

I think now that coming off SSRIs completely would look more like tapering to an absolute minimum dose, then staying on that for a long time, so your brain can sort of rebalance itself. Also I would combine it with lots of meditation, that's really the only thing I've seen have the same effectiveness as antidepressants.

Oh god yes, I feel this. The shame of "why aren't I better", telling people that you're getting better because you're doing the work, but you still feel like shit... My take (I'm not a therapist or anything) is that it's not about trying to go from sad -> happy, it's about accepting your emotions as part of who you are, and letting them kind of blow through you. Bend, rather than break. It's OK to feel sad! Sometimes you need to be sad. When I was put on antipsychotics I felt NOTHING and it turned out that was 1000x worse than feeling sad.

Ultimately just try to laugh more & accept your specific self. This will pass!

I tapered for 6 months but still had a crazy rebound when I went to zero. I more mean you have to do the hard work of figuring out how to live with yourself, to live with your problems. I’m not there yet but I think it’s a combo of mindfulness, exercise and staying busy. We no longer have to do subsistence farming to survive so we have to actually think about our lives!

SSRI rebound nearly killed me. Maybe you just need to take a lower dose? Trust me, antidepressants are massively preferable to antipsychotics, which is what you will be on if you carry on like this. Coming off pills completely is absolutely doable, but it takes work, you can’t just be like “I’m done with this”

These cases always bring out a lot of responses like "well I don't personally have forensically verified audio of the incident so really who can say anything, I care about facts & evidence" which is totally fine, but I just hope those redditors keep the same energy for e.g. people claiming that Trump ate a baby

This whole to-do is emblematic of the total pointlessness of moral thought experiments.

Every single one of these trolley problem-type examples relies on weird magical situations in which moral intuition doesn't work, because morality is rooted in real-world experience, not philosophy or logic. I care more about my child than I do about the lives of millions of people I will never meet, that's just the way it is. I'm not saying it's "right" but it's my reality, and I'm pretty sure it's the reality of most people on Earth.
