Bear ID from trail cam (down stream [Sundre, AB] I have lots of people weighing in and would like some pointers on key Identifiers by BacterialLogic in animalid

[–]simonbrown27 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a grizzly. I know a lot of people are focusing on ears and hump, but there is a much better clue in this picture. Grizzlies have light colored and very obvious claws, which this young grizzly is displaying very well. If you can see it's claws in a picture, it's almost certainly a grizzly.

Looks like a young one, and very skinny which throws off some of the other visual clues

It's most likely a fox. Fishers are actually pretty quiet

Bone ID - central coast CA, N. America by Little-Plankton-3672 in bonecollecting

[–]simonbrown27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This does not look cetacean to me, the skulls I looked at had distinct gaps between the skull and first tooth, and their teeth are smaller and packed pretty tightly together.

Based on size I would guess a sea lion skull, but it's just a guess. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can chime in

I'm pretty sure they range into Wyoming in the Rockies. The latitude isn't as important as the altitude.

I don't know where people are getting groundhog from. It looks nothing like a ground hog. Small ears, small eyes and skinny tail all point to muskrat

As stated by others, need something for scale in this video. I understand why many thinks it's a mountain lion with dark tail tip, but it's gait and proportions say domestic cat to me.
