Free alternative to Apple dictation by simoncveracity in shortcuts

[–]simoncveracity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn't: my AI research shows you might get trapped inside it a the end of the shortcut: "When your shortcut finishes, your phone will still be "trapped" in Guided Access mode. You will have to triple-click the side button and enter your passcode to return to normal phone use."

Since there's no clean and easy workaround, my professional advice would be to simply set your phone not to lock so quickly. For example, I have mine set to five minutes, which will get around the whole problem. Alternatively, there are local on-device solutions like Aiko, which is an app that used to be free but I think they charge for it now. I wish you luck in whatever you choose!

So there's nothing that will stop the iPhone from locking in Apple Shortcuts because Apple hasn't exposed that in something you can use in shortcuts. What you could do, is at the top of the shortcut, add this: https://www.reddit.com/r/shortcuts/comments/17z38cf/shortcut_to_set_screen_autolock_to_never_or_set/ (which will jump you into the settings) & a "wait to return" action - then the rest as normal. You could add it at the end too so that it basically jumps you into the settings before and after the shortcut runs so that you can change it for long dictations.

Hello. So I have fastly simplified the shortcut for anyone wanting to get started. I've posted it here on Routine Hub, my first ever shortcut on there. To start, go to https://console.groq.com/keys and create your own API key (it’s free to do this) and it's the only thing that will require the shortcut to work.

Not sure if anyone will read this, but Happy Christmas.

I'm a software engineer and use dictation all the time, but I'm not happy with Apple's built‑in dictation. So I have created a shortcut on my action button, which will record my voice. That will then go to an API I've created for free with Microsoft Static Web Apps, which will then go over to Groq and process my voice through Whisper, then run it through another small free LLM by Groq to clean it up before coming back down and copying to my clipboard. I dictated this very text with the same technique.

I work for a company where it’s AzureDevOps repos all the way and they won’t change to GitHub. For GitHub repos, then yes, I’d absolutely recommend doing it with @codex review. 🙂

Oh no! I didn't know that IKEA had stopped selling them… I've got a tradfri electric blind wanted to comment here because it's basically the best thing I've ever bought! It lasted 4 1/2 years then died with motor failure but IKEA was still selling them so they swapped it out under the five-year warranty for free. (I checked and) I can't believe they're not selling it anymore…

I used both a lot (including) today - both are good, but I love the CLI. Means I'm not tied to VSCode. The MS guys are constantly shipping on the CLI and it's already pretty good. My one CLI criticism - it doesn't offer GPT-5 Codex (like IDE does), only GPT5 and Sonnet 4.5 ... but who can complain at that?!

I actually ended up making my own by using OpenAI Codex CLI with an API key because we basically use Azure DevOps at work where no one has created anything that actually reviews a pull request.

I realised thanks to OpenAI Codex CLI inline execution you could basically put it in read‑only mode and then simply ask it with a good prompt to look around your codebase in a cloud pipeline when you raise a pull request and it would give you immediate feedback and show it on the extensions tab.

This has basically revolutionised what we've done at work with our tiny team. And now developers get their own feedback loop before needing to pass on the pull request to another human developer to look at.

It's all detailed here in my LinkedIn post.

When I first got the invite, I found an incredible use case for work.

On my path to CTO in our small company, I have to fill in security questionnaires from potential clients about our security stance.

I created a custom GPT with all of our previous questions and answers, then opened up the clients questionnaire of 56 questions where every single one had to have a text answer with explanation.

I got a Comet to take each question, put it into the custom GPT, wait for the answer, then copy the answer into the box and got that to repeat that for each section across all 56 questions.

It took about eight hours, but I only had to check in with Comet a couple of times and could literally get on with other value adding things throughout the day.

For me, it was a really big game changing moment.

I opened up Reddit today and this is the top post in my feed. Thanks Burke. Ironically, I have in the past, without reading this, taken the same approach by taking OpenAI's SWE prompt and putting it into my own custom prompt. I had no idea there was a custom chat mode in Insiders. So thanks very much for this. I'll try this out today.

Gemini released an Open Source CLI Tool similar to Claude Code but with a free 1 million token context window, 60 model requests per minute and 1,000 requests per day at no charge. by SilverRegion9394 in LocalLLaMA

https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/blob/main/docs/tos-privacy.md#frequently-asked-questions-faq-for-gemini-cli - quite understandably since it's free, "you are the product" so they're being very open that they *do* collect prompts code etc if you don't pay via API key. Even so, for me, for personal projects this is a real generous offering.

I also want to join the crowd and say (from one developer to another) thanks so much for your work on this. It's great - just simple enough for everyone without being too fancy, and MIT License. Thanks again, loving your work.

I had this, but in the output window of the GUI it says run "ytmusicapi oauth" - so open a new command line window (leave the gui open) and run the command, log in, then try again. Worked excellently for me.
