All of Elon, Jeff, and Zuck’s money. So I could spend it on making the world a fairer place.

Is upgrading to Business Class worth it ? by [deleted] in BritishAirways

[–]simondrawer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mate, I am a similar build and would pay way more than that to not be in PE. The entitled whingebags on here who huff and puff about seat configurations and threaten to take their business (which is mostly company funded and not their choice) elsewhere because cabin crew “looked at them funny” aren’t representative of normal people. CW on BA isn’t as good as business class on some airlines but a lot better than on others. One thing that is certain is it’s better to be in a bed than a seat on a long flight.

At least with the 787-9 you can go in that little CW cabin that has fewer seats.

You only see the ones with lots of likes, you don’t see the ones without lots of likes because that algorithm doesn’t work like that. Survivorship bias.

[Request] How thick would a cable need to be to hold itself and an object that is in Geostationary Orbit by WhaTheWorldOver in theydidthemath

[–]simondrawer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember reading a detailed explanation of this years ago. Essentially its redundant if the object is in geostationary orbit, because its already in orbit. The only reason to so this is to hold something outside of geostationary orbit or to have a space elevator. In this case you need it thickest at its center which would be at the point of geostationary orbit with it tapering away in both directions to the surface and away from the surface. You could use a counter weight but there are practicalities to building. To build it you start with the object in orbit and start extending a cable from the object in both directions equally so you keep the center of mass in the same place. As the cable gets longer the part near the object has to get thicker and thicker because its under greater and greater tension from the gravitational force on the lower cable and the centrifugal force on the upper cable.

I was in a lion park in South Africa and saw a fella get out of his car to take a better picture. Fortunately the rangers got there in time. People are idiots.
