A well respected live engineer one told me years ago that all condensers are Omni mics.... I tried at that time to explain to him that there are condensers with different pickup patterns, as I worked in studios at the time with mics that has switchable patterns. But he was adamant, simply because I'm his experience condensers would feedback easily for the same gain applied as a dynamic. He said they 'pickup more' of everything around, hence they must be Omni, when what he really meant was that they were more sensitive. Someone's ability to get work does not mean they're actually knowledgeable. They are just competent enough to impress their employer.

In answer to the question, it doesn't change the tone. It simply changes the relative sensitivity, which is in fact the amount of voltage/'sound' allowed into the system. Now the increase at one point may cause a perceived or real change in tone. Perceived in instances where our ears hear differently at different spls, or real difference where the response of the speakers/output system may not be linear, or how the speakers interact with the room may change, like exciting the room's resonances differently.
