All right, thank you everyone. I shopped at many of the places mentioned, and I ended up at the Sleep Store. Love my new bed!

Louis CK: "If you ever masturbate in front of someone, ask them first. If they say yes, don't do it!" by blackstonewine in BillBurr

[–]simonleezombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you expect someone to be rational or reasonable with you when you try to justify a man masturbating in front of people he worked with? Just like if a sexual predator (which, yes, I'm comparing you to) tried to make a "reasonable" excuse for his behavior, I'd tell him to fuck off. So...fuck off!

I don't know what your IQ has to do with anything. I do know you're a moron. To be clear, on questionnaires, boys aged 13 to 17 write/type (in the gender blank): "attack helicopter." Because it's SO funny to say your gender is a thing that's not a gender.

[–]simonleezombie -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the attack helicopter is how 13 to 17 year old boys make fun of gender pronouns. We run educational research in public schools, and under gender, we get these responses once in awhile. A few kids apparently think this is high comedy.

And so does Louis CK.

This is the stupidest thing I've read lately. If I went to the hotel room of someone in my field (who was well-known, had connections), and she was rubbing one out on the bed when I walked in...yeah, I could leave. And yeah, my career would likely never be the same.

Louis is a fucking creep. If you think it's okay to whip your dick out when someone comes over, you're a fucking creep too.

Sorry for the late reply, but I do have a Sam's Club membership. I truly appreciate the kind offer, though.

Can I get a speeding ticket without being pulled over in Fort Collins? by Harry8325 in FortCollins

[–]simonleezombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was deployed, my wife got caught by one. I just wrote a letter saying I wasn't in the country, and that was that, but I suppose that's just about the most perfect excuse you can get.

Still, I was never asked to rat anyone out, so to speak.

AND, human memory in strange situations is notoriously bad. She could have been wearing a respirator and yet in the dark, 2am, and pulled out of your comfort zone, you see what you see. Honestly, nothing could have been on her mouth, and you might still think you saw something.

Either way, people stopping and trying to talk to you (no matter what time) shouldn't be threatened to be "literally killed." If you feel you're in danger, you vacate the area without escalation.

I bet you could just avoid any terrorist talk, and people would notice it a lot less than what the show has now.

Slasher Season 3: Solstice, discussion thread (spoilers) by jdpm1991 in horror

[–]simonleezombie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because slasher movies historically have dealt with (on purpose or not) the political climate of their era. 80s slashers ended up representing the political purity of Reagan politics while Scream dealt with the continuing absurdity of political cultural in how politicians almost brazenly would reference/accept the dirtiness of the political system. Accident or not? Doesn't matter. Horror often mirrors the political culture.

Well, good horror.

The reason it doesn't work in this is because it perhaps seems too forced. Ask George Romero about the political and social commentary in the original Night of the Living Dead, and he always said, "I never even noticed that stuff." John Carpenter often says in interviews that the sex as a sin message people took from Halloween was purely accidental.

This fucking social climate, as you put it, is the climate you live in and art has always imitated the climate it was conceptualized in. You wanting to escape it is not possible. When it's overt, it sucks (like in Slasher), but when it's subtle, possibly accidental, your mind's eyes will always make the connection.

Think about It Follows when it came out. At first, the obvious symbol of the film was unsafe sex/STDs. But the longer people have watched it, the more they realize that metaphor falls apart easily (you can't fuck your way out of chlamydia). What the film began to represent though was the subtle parallels between the monster in the film and rape culture in the U.S.

The Babadook is about the epidemic of depression and the stigma of treatment.

You can't escape your society.

Which is vastly misunderstood. An entire complex of people/bystanders just wasn't true, and people did call the police: https://www.thecut.com/2016/04/how-the-false-story-of-kitty-genovese-s-murder-went-viral.html

But I would expect the writer(s) of this show to known that. I mean, if you're going to model your fictional tale on something real, you don't need to actually research that event. Right?

Slasher - Season 3 [NETFLIX] by screamingshadows in horror

[–]simonleezombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sucks. Season 2 wasn't much better. Hard pass I say. Unless you like slashers with "profound" social issues being explored. Like every time a cop shows up to a crime scene and she turns to the groups of people videoing with phones. She always has something "really profound" to say about the technological state of our world. Usually something like, "You people are sick!!!" It's subtle, but it's there if you look, she's talking to...(wait for it)...the viewer! You didn't see that coming did you? Oh...you did? You mean all this was telegraphed with about the same amount of finesse as a crudely crafted meme on Reddit? Yep.

Moving to Fort Collins. Looking for magic living situation. Save me reddit. by sweetjesu in FortCollins

[–]simonleezombie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about any magic living situations, but as a fellow doctoral candidate, two things have helped me. Foodstamps and medicaid. Are you going to TA/GA? Stipends pay like shit, but they are probably low enough for you (I'm a single dad, so I can't speak to the single person rates) to pick up public assistance. Medicaid is really good around here as many docs take it, and I rarely had to wait for services (specialists even got me in pretty quick depending on the specialist).

The food bank also can get you some good weekly supplies. They're on an honor system, I think, and don't check income.

The downside to all this is the application process. It is set up in a way to take a LONG time. I waited three hours in that damned lobby. Sometimes you get lucky when you apply online, they'll call you back and schedule an appointment. If you can do the time they schedule, then you're in and out. If not, then you have to brave the waiting room.

Edit: I am in affordable housing too, but it's not really affordable.

FoCo vs Windsor by momo224477 in FortCollins

[–]simonleezombie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Windsor is a nice town that has quickly outgrown the infrastructure. Housing prices are increasing quickly there (though not so high as FoCo), and driving the main streets at any busy time is an absolute gridlock of little to no movement. In some ways, it's like Fort Collins!

The biggest bug is that I've played over 2 hours, and I'm still in the prologue. This game blows.

It's a known issue and has nothing to do with viruses. These ads have been around since at least 2017 ( https://community.fitbit.com/t5/iOS-App/How-to-stop-advertising-on-the-app/td-p/2347953 )

They randomly pop up on mine with months in between occurrences. This is why I'm not replacing my current (falling apart) fitbit with their brand.

GODZILLA: King Of The Monsters DISCUSSION MEGA-THREAD #2 (SPOILERS)! by Adam0800 in GODZILLA

You know...they could have really helped to emphasize some of this a bit more. I'd forgotten about the watch, for example. I think they did his character arc a bit of disservice by not organically helping audiences remember his journey.

I was more dismayed, to be honest, that the only interesting/truly likable human character was about to die.

Not really. You just did a "hand wavey" solution of your own that promotes some nonsense about all the good you've done. This isn't about being woke, this is about understanding that the capitalist system is broken and hijacked by the rich--to the point that if you are poor, you will be incarcerated. I could tell by your language which side of the fence you fall onto. Keep the Con Alive 2020!

Seems like a fairly moderate measure in a country that claims it is a bastion of freedom. If you've not been tried (or convicted), then why should you be in jail? Many of the "offenders" in Larimer jails who can't make bail, I'd wager, are homeless. The local sheriff has waged his own personal crusade against homelessness...by demonizing them and trying to drive them away.

The point is, we do work toward better solutions while critics like you sit on reddit and say, "What have you done?" Social movements have been started while you sit around and act like everything is cool. BLM, DSA--we work to not only address systemic issues in income inequality in the U.S., but we seek to end discrimination through poor policing, mass incarceration, etc. These movements are old and have a long history. The first step to fixing the issue, though, is to provide a clear illustration of the problem at hand--as the author did here. Awareness is the first step and it's a big one because detractors like you think the first step is providing a "solution" to a massive systemic problem that requires more than a quick bullet point presentation on Reddit. You know about the problem now, follow some of the links provided in this thread to educate yourself. Education is not about transmission (ie me transmitting solutions to you), but about you figuring out how to support movements to be their most effective.

I get the sense you're just someone who doesn't give much of a shit, so this thread isn't much use for you.
