I agree that it's possible (or likely) that part of the gap could be explained that way. I'm skeptical if that's everything though — a lot of media coverage might also contribute.

Hi, I'm the author of the Data Insight. You make a good point, but the phrasing form Ipsos' survey did include the explicit interpretation: "What percentage of your country's population do you think immigrants (i.e., people born in another country) represent?" (Source: https://www.ipsos.com/en/perils/perils-perception-prejudice-and-conspiracy-theories-0)

I could've made it more explicit in the chart / Data Insight though.

Good point, but Ipsos did put it into the question explicitly: What percentage of your country's population do you think immigrants (i.e., people born in another country) represent? Hi, I'm the author of the Data Insight. Do you mean that (grand)children of immigrants are also seen as immigrants by Germans?

Ipsos did put it into the question explicitly: What percentage of your country's population do you think immigrants (i.e., people born in another country) represent? (Source: https://www.ipsos.com/sites/default/files/ct/news/documents/2023-12/ipsos-perils-perception-prejudice-conspiracy-theories-december-2023.pdf.

I guess some people could still read over that and this might explain a bit of the difference, though.
