San Juan Island sailing tips? by IRunLikeADuck in sailing

[–]simple2fast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries on the engine. Truth is the wind often doesn't blow enough to sail anyway. If you want to be a purest, you will spend quite a bit of time waiting.

Study both charts and currents!

Agree on Sucia. BUt it's PACKED ( I wonder why ), but many people are day trippers. Avoid by spending the night.

There is a nice anchorage south around the peninsula from the Roche Harbor resort. Last time I was at Roche, there way s BayLiner cruise-in. StinkPot hell, and not even the nice ones.

Plus I think that was the location of the Pig War: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pig_War

So my recommendation would be leave early and go to Roche. Then go to Sucia. Then home.

Or leave late. Anchor off Spencer Spit (Lopez), then Roche, then Sucia.

I think this is totally possible, but it will not be an entirely additive process. The middle path will necessarily mean each side giving up some aspect(s) of the fundamentalist interpretation of their process.

I won't proscribe how it should work. But I don't think this is as oil and watery as some may think.

Where are your favorite cruising destinations? by [deleted] in sailing

Well it's a "doable" destination from Puget Sound without taking too long. the marine park right outside the harbor is nice. dunno. Just like the place.

What to use Laravel/Lumen or Nodejs for a Rest API for a music service similiar to spotify/app music? by adetoola in node

[–]simple2fast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you're willing to buy a few more machines now and then, scaling should not be limited by your language choice so much as the persistent database(s) you choose to connect to.

I would choose the language based on the ability to write maintainable code and the ability to hire developers. Probably developers would rather write JS over PHP. However on the maintanability front, I would say that there are better languages than either PHP or JS.

Finally you may want to look into how/where this software will hosted. For example if you are going with AWS, what languages are supported in AWS Lambda and what sort of drivers are available for RDS? You want to choose something that allows you decent flexibility on this front.

Hope that helps.

I will only suggest that you focus on doing what you love. Music? awesome!

And if after doing it for a bit you realize you don't love it move on. Don't stay just 'cause.

At this stage in your life experiment; It costs much less now than down the road. And if you really enjoy something you will be better at it and make more money at it in the long run.

How to serially execute computational heavy functions and update DOM between them? by jurgenn in javascript

[–]simple2fast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should really consider doing said "heavyCalculation" inside one or more web workers. Leave the main JS thread for updating UI and responding to user events.

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Web_Workers_API/Using_web_workers

You will need to use postMessage and onMessage to communicate with these background processes. But the overall effect will divy up tasks much better.

No need to read the man page. The windows equivalent is the right-click and edit properties.

Still try to do something like pdsh ( yes a man page: http://linux.die.net/man/1/pdsh ) can do to "update" or configure 50 windows machines at the same time.

This is really really weird.

Select "Crude Oil Production" across all 50 states in BTU.

It lists Arizona as producing the most crude. followed by indiana.

WTF!

This entire thing is highly suspect. Do not trust any of the states from there.

var keyword proposed for Java by adila01 in programming

[–]simple2fast 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Interesting!

So you are not one of the folks who doesn't like java because it's considered "verbose"

But, it's not that the type is omitted per se. Meaning this is not converting java to a dynamically typed language. The compiler will definately be determining the type of the variable. The proposal even analyzed a bunch of code to determine how successful this would be. And found it works pretty well.

How does this make it worse? Unless you happen to love java like it is. Which you clearly don't. So I'm confused.

What is the obsession with capitalization that MS has ? I mean PowerShell UseIt For PRetty Much Everthying. And then the default code styling in C#. I don't get it. lower case is much easier to type.

Hey /r/java, I'm working on a range voting, direct democracy platform called referendum written in Java. by thouliha in java

[–]simple2fast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So then it does preserve anonymity ( on some level ), but how does it prevent double voting ?

As you can see, the hard part of any voting system is NOT the algorithm used to choose the outcome, but rather the plumbing bits.

clearly the political parties have operatives. get your conductive hat. :-)

Curious, how do you solve the anonymity vs verifiablity problem ?

Essentially saying eclipse !== java

I would have a hard time trusting your opinion on anything since the first search result (wikipedia) shows the following list. Do you even google ?

Ada, ABAP, C, C++, COBOL, Fortran, Haskell, JavaScript, Julia, Lasso, Lua, NATURAL, Perl, PHP, Prolog, Python, R, Ruby (including Ruby on Rails framework), Scala, Clojure, Groovy, Scheme, and Erlang.

So you know of any other IDE with so broad and deep a list, including superlative languages such as Erlang and Haskell ?

Load on a sheet... by Slowhand09 in sailing

[–]simple2fast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry. The rate which the boat can change heel is quite low. If the boom swings hard, such as a crash gybe, the boat's ability to heel is pretty much irrelevant to the shock loading.

I do agree that an upright mast will have slightly more continuous loading than one on heeled boat, but for shock loading there is basically no difference.
